Role Overview
We are looking to recruit a skilled Maintenance Fitter (Mechanical) to join a small, technically focused team. This is a fantastic opportunity to work for a global company with development opportunities.
This role is primarily focused on mechanical fitting, fault diagnosis, and precision maintenance of plant equipment rather than fabrication. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and installation of mechanical systems, as well as minor mechanical modifications, following established engineering procedures.
Working a shift system including an on-call rota, the Maintenance Fitter will ensure the reliability and performance of plant processing equipment through hands-on mechanical maintenance, alignment, and fault finding. The role involves working with a wide range of heavy industrial machinery, requiring strong diagnostic capability and attention to mechanical tolerances.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform planned preventative maintenance activities as set out in the weekly maintenance plan.
- Diagnose faults, strip, inspect, and rebuild mechanical equipment to OEM standards.
- Respond to plant breakdowns with a strong focus on root cause analysis and effective repair.
- Carry out condition-based inspections (e.g., bearings, drives, alignment, wear components) and report findings.
- Assemble, install, align, and commission mechanical equipment including:
- Belt and chain elevators
- Conveyors and drive systems
- Crushers, mills, and classifiers
- Screens and associated rotating equipment
- Perform precision fitting tasks such as bearing installation, shaft alignment, and tolerance checking.
- Carry out minor mechanical modifications to plant equipment (fabrication is secondary to fitting work).
- Work safely in confined spaces following training and permit systems.
- Complete pre-job risk assessments and adhere strictly to site safety procedures.
- Communicate effectively with operations and engineering teams regarding equipment status and repair timelines.
- Highlight recurring issues and recommend mechanical improvements to increase reliability.
Experience / Skills & Competencies:
- Proven experience in industrial mechanical fitting and maintenance (essential).
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills on mechanical plant equipment.
- Demonstrated experience with rotating equipment, drives, bearings, gearboxes, and conveyors.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, and assembly diagrams.
- Competence in precision fitting techniques (alignment, measurement, installation of components).
- Experience with crushing, grinding, and conveying machinery (highly desirable).
- Basic fabrication skills are beneficial, but this role is not fabrication-led.
- Familiarity with maintenance systems and basic IT (email, reporting tools).
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team.
