The Role
We're looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Barista to join us on Portobello Road. You'll be at the heart of the shop, preparing and serving a wide range of hot and cold drinks — from a perfectly pulled espresso to a beautiful specialty beverage — while making every customer feel welcome.
What you'll be doing:
- Preparing and serving a range of hot and cold drinks, including our freshly roasted coffees, teas, and specialty drinks
- Taking customer orders and offering genuine, knowledgeable recommendations
- Operating espresso machines, coffee brewing equipment, and other kit to a high standard
- Keeping the coffee bar clean, organised, and running smoothly
- Handling cash transactions accurately
- Assisting with food preparation as needed, including our pastries baked fresh each morning
- Following food safety regulations at all times
- Delivering exceptional service — handling questions, solving problems, and making people's day a little better
What we're looking for:
- A passion for coffee and a genuine enthusiasm for the craft
- Great customer service instincts and a warm, friendly manner
- The ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Good attention to detail, time management, and the ability to prioritise
- Basic maths skills for cash handling and order processing
- Awareness of food safety practices (training provided)

About Coffee Plant
Coffee Plant's story began in 1985, when journalist Ian Henshall started roasting coffee on the street corner of Portobello Road as a way to finance his magazine. The coffee, it turned out, took off rather more than the publishing. What started on a market pitch has grown into one of London's most loved independent roasteries, moving into a permanent shop in 1997 and expanding to a larger roasting facility in Wembley in 2013.
Today, Coffee Plant is a genuine Notting Hill institution — an independent roastery and café at 180 Portobello Road, open seven days a week and beloved by locals, market regulars, and coffee lovers from across London and beyond. We're far more than a café: we roast over 30 different coffees in-house, with freshly roasted beans delivered to the shop twice a week, and we supply wholesale and mail order customers across the UK and Europe. We specialise in pure arabica coffees, with a particular focus on organic and Fairtrade certified beans — and we believe we have one of the largest ranges of dual-certified coffee in the UK.
The philosophy here has always been simple: if the product is good, everything else follows. No gimmicks, no shortcuts — just great coffee, sourced with care, roasted with expertise, and served with warmth.
