Driver/Operative
About the Role
We are recruiting a Driver/Operative to support the delivery of high-quality street cleansing services across Newport. This is a hands-on operational role suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in maintaining clean public spaces, and is committed to delivering a safe, reliable, and professional service.
What You'll Be Doing
- Carrying out street cleansing duties in line with contractual standards and daily route schedules
- Driving Council vehicles when required, following all driver policies and procedures
- Completing cleansing and driving duties as directed by supervisors and management
- Following all health and safety procedures at all times
- Wearing the required uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Reporting accidents, incidents, defects, and safety concerns promptly
- Attending mandatory training as required
- Providing support and guidance to Cleansing Operatives when working as part of a team
- Delivering a professional service and maintaining positive interactions with colleagues and members of the public
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Supporting other related duties appropriate to the role when required
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Full, valid UK Driving Licence
- Right to work in the UK
- Good knowledge of the Newport area
- Understanding of working within a public sector environment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good customer service and communication skills
- Ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines
- Positive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop new skills
- Physically fit and able to carry out regular walking, lifting, bending, and carrying duties
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Availability to work the required shift pattern, including weekends and Bank Holidays
- Commitment to health and safety and equal opportunities
Desirable:
- Previous experience in refuse collection or street cleansing services
- Supervisory experience or experience leading a small team
