Job Responsibilities:
You will:
- Understand what reports managers and teams need and make sure they are delivered correctly
- Create, update, and maintain reports used for performance monitoring and statutory (legal) reporting
- Build and manage data systems that collect information from different sources using SQL, APIs, and ETL processes
- Clean, transform, and combine data into a central data warehouse for analysis
- Design and develop dashboards and reports using Power BI
- Automate reporting processes to save time and reduce manual work
- Make sure reports are accurate, clear, and meet business and legal requirements
- Test reports and fix any errors or issues
- Write clear technical documentation and user guides
- Support service teams by providing data insights to help improve performance and decision-making
- Help the council meet legal data and reporting requirements, including equality and regulatory obligations
- Provide data for inspections, audits, surveys, and external assessments
- Offer advice on whether data/reporting requests are possible and how best to deliver them
- Help understand local needs using data, including needs of minority groups
- Work with different teams across the council to improve use of data
- Help develop better ways of working using technology and data systems
- Support or supervise other data staff when required and help develop their skills
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across departments and external partners
- Follow all data protection, GDPR, FOI, and council policies
- Support improvement projects and help plan and deliver data-related work
Person Specifications:
You should have:
Education & Training
- A degree or equivalent work experience
- Ongoing learning or professional development in relevant areas
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Experience working with data quality issues and fixing data problems
- Experience designing reports and understanding how data links together
- Ability to create different types of reports (tables, charts, summaries)
- Understanding of databases and data warehouse systems
- Strong SQL skills (including queries and stored procedures)
- Experience with ETL processes (moving and transforming data)
- Experience using Power BI or similar reporting tools
- Knowledge of Python is helpful
- Experience with reporting tools like SSRS is desirable
- Understanding of Power Platform tools (Power BI, PowerApps, Power Automate, SharePoint)
- Awareness of how public sector data systems work (desirable)
- Understanding of how software systems are developed and updated
- Knowledge of data protection laws (GDPR and related legislation)
- Ability to turn business needs into technical solutions
- Ability to test and validate reports before release
