Howard Finley group are recruiting for a finance manager who coordinates and manages the complete day-to-day financial operations of the business in line with corporate governance, project requirements, and industry legislation. Key responsibilities include ensuring strict financial control, optimising project-by-project commercial metrics, managing specialised construction tax compliances, and delivering accurate management accounts to the board.
Technical & Compliance
· Ensure all accounting activities are carried out to contract specifications, corporate governance, and statutory technical requirements.
· Compile, review, and issue comprehensive financial and project cost models as and when required.
· Undertake complex variance calculations, cash flow forecasting models, and balance sheet reconciliations.
· Assist with commercial project reviews and board meetings where financial representation is appropriate.
· Support the management and site teams by delivering accurate technical guidance on project spend, material commitments, and budget compliance.
· Oversee the timely execution and accuracy of Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) verification, deductions, and monthly HMRC returns.
· Manage compliance and record-keeping for the Domestic Reverse Charge VAT regulations applicable to construction and steelwork services.
Communications & Reporting
· Attend senior management and project team meetings to discuss financial progress, contract valuations, and budgetary performance.
· Record financial variances and directly inform the Financial Director / Managing Director, giving clear, accurate, and concise data.
· Carry out financial briefings and performance reviews as directed by the Financial Director or Managing Director.
Quality & Audit Control
· Conduct regular financial audits of sales ledgers, purchase ledgers, and credit control records.
· Monitor project financial tracking in strict accordance with the company's internal quality standards and cost-control systems.
· Complete and sign off monthly balance sheet control sheets and sub-contractor ledger audits.
· Prepare comprehensive year-end audit files and act as the primary liaison for external auditors.
Commercial & Contract Accounting
· Oversee and manage project-by-project measurement, valuations, and contract margins, capturing data to advise appropriate directors.
· Produce and maintain accurate cost allocation sheets, daily resource costing data, and material commitment trackers.
· Log, store, and maintain financial information, transaction records, invoices, and commercial correspondence on a day-to-day basis in line with organizational and legal requirements.
· Lead the credit control function to optimize working capital cycles and minimize exposure with main contractors.
Operational & Staff Administration
· Ensure all project and administrative personnel are familiar with specific site cost-allocation and financial control processes.
· Co-ordinate the preparation of company-wide financial control systems, cash flow programs, and commercial schedules.
· Carry out monthly material and plant reconciliations, ensuring actual costs align perfectly with purchasing orders.
· Oversee and process the company's monthly payroll, pensions, and statutory deductions for engineering, site-based, and office-based staff.
General
· Inform the appropriate Directors on a regular basis regarding any critical financial, risk, or related commercial issues.
· Report all transaction discrepancies and compliance anomalies immediately to the Financial Director / Managing Director.
· Any other range of commercial or financial duties that are reasonably required by the company to successfully carry out the role.
The Candidate (Requirements)
· Technical Qualifications: Degree qualified in Accounting/Finance or fully qualified ACCA / CIMA / ACA (Qualified by Experience with a strong construction background will be considered).
· Experience: Proven financial management track record specifically within structural steelwork, civil engineering, or heavy construction sub-contracting.
· Very good verbal and written communication skills to articulate commercial data to technical engineering managers.
· Strong mathematical, technical, and data analysis skills.
· Computer Literate: Expert proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, and specialist construction accounting packages (e.g., Sage 50, Xero, or equivalent CRM/ERP modules).
· Strong leadership and management skills along with the ability to delegate tasks effectively.
· Ability to work strictly under tight monthly and statutory deadlines.
· Able to analyze large amounts of financial data and propose commercial solutions.
