Special Needs Teaching Assistant

Long Term Futures is currently recruiting for a compassionate and dedicated Special Needs Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEND school in Birmingham. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting children and young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and complex physical disabilities.
The school provides a highly supportive environment where pupils require significant levels of assistance throughout the school day. As such, we are seeking individuals who are comfortable providing personal care, supporting mobility needs, and helping pupils access a meaningful and engaging curriculum.
About the Role
Working alongside teachers, therapists, and specialist support staff, you will play a key role in supporting pupils with complex needs on both a 1:1 and small-group basis. Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting pupils with PMLD and physical disabilities throughout the school day
- Assisting learners with personalised educational activities and sensory-based learning opportunities
- Providing personal care in a respectful, dignified, and professional manner
- Supporting pupils with mobility needs, including transfers and positioning where required
- Following individual care plans, therapy programmes, and EHCP targets
- Encouraging communication, engagement, and independence at an appropriate level for each pupil
- Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and medical professionals to ensure pupils receive consistent support
- Maintaining accurate records and reporting any concerns in line with safeguarding procedures
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Experience supporting children, young people, or adults with complex needs, PMLD, or physical disabilities
- Comfortable carrying out personal care as a fundamental part of the role
- Manual Handling training is highly desirable, although training can be provided
- Patient, caring, and able to adapt to the individual needs of each pupil
- Understanding of the importance of dignity, respect, and person-centred support
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Reliable, committed, and able to build positive relationships with pupils and staff
- Previous experience within education, care, support work, healthcare, or residential settings would be advantageous
