SENNIES is supporting a wonderful family in North London in their search for a dedicated Sennie to support their 10-year-old son. We are seeking an experienced and resilient Sennie interested in a long-term position, supporting all aspects of B10’s home life and development during these hours. The family is keen to find someone who will provide context in situations, give B10 advance notice of what to expect, support him if he becomes stressed or dysregulated, and keep him safe whilst ensuring he feels understood and supported.
About the Child: B10 is a cheerful and curious 10-year-old boy who enjoys animals, trains, transportation, music, outdoor adventures, nature, excursions, cooking and baking, numbers and shapes, building projects, sensory play (sand and water), trampolining, gymnastics, and being read to. His family believes he has a natural talent for mathematics and are eager to nurture this interest.
B10 has a diagnosis of Autism with delayed verbal communication. He communicates using short, simple sentences, and his family encourages him to verbalise during activities and requests to foster independence. They are mindful that speaking can be tiring for him and place importance on responding to his non-verbal cues and modelling language during interactions. The family uses concise language to support his processing and expects the Sennie to follow this approach.
Earlier this year following a house move, B10 experienced a period of significant dysregulation and low mood, and has been unable to attend school. He is in the process of returning to his happy, engaged self, and the family is looking for a consistent and thoughtful Sennie to help maintain this progress. Experience working in education, to be able to plan and carry out some simple learning activities with him during the day, would be beneficial.
SENNIES has supported this family for many years and can confidently say that B10 thrives when surrounded by a supportive and understanding team. While he does not have a PDA diagnosis, in periods of distress he shows increased demand avoidance similar to PDA, so experience in PDA behaviours is desirable. The family is committed to ongoing training and development for the right candidate.
Approach to Regulation:
B10 uses a variety of stimming behaviours for self-regulation and expression. These are supported unless unsafe, in which case they are gently redirected to appropriate alternatives such as chewies or weighted items. A calm, accepting, and flexible approach is essential.
Key Considerations for the Role:
The Sennie should take an empathetic, child-led approach, adapting to B10’s perspective and needs. Safety is paramount, particularly in the community, while still allowing flexibility in how B10 moves and engages with the world. He may seek proprioceptive input, such as lying on the ground, which is supported where safe. Due to hypermobility and reduced body awareness, he may tire easily, so pacing and awareness are important. Familiarity with, or willingness to learn using a visual timetable, a now and next board, his ASC device, or a pictogram agenda app is required to support transitions and changes in routine. Sensitivity to noise and sensory input is also essential. The family values encouragement of effort over outcomes and does not use reward-based behavioural strategies.
Important Note: The family prefers not to proceed with applicants who plan to incorporate behavioural therapy strategies into their approach.
