Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – SEMH Support

A specialist SEMH academy is seeking skilled and committed Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. These roles are based across both primary and secondary settings in South London and offer strong routes into long-term careers in education.
This is an ideal opportunity for individuals with a calm, mature approach and a background in youth work, care, support work or education—especially those looking to build towards HLTA status, behaviour lead roles, or teacher training.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work 1:1 and in small groups with pupils who require emotional and behavioral support
- Assist with planning, preparation and delivery of tailored learning interventions
- Foster positive relationships and help pupils develop self-regulation and confidence
- Provide behaviour support and contribute to a calm, consistent learning environment
- Monitor progress and report on pupils' engagement, behaviour, and development
- Liaise with teaching staff, therapists, and families to support individual learning plans
Essential Requirements:
- HLTA status or working towards HLTA qualification (support provided if not yet certified)
- Minimum Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Childcare, Education or similar
- Experience working with SEMH or challenging behaviour, ideally in a school, youth, or care setting
- Strong behaviour management and communication skills
- Emotional resilience and the ability to remain calm under pressure
- A genuine passion for inclusion and improving outcomes for vulnerable young people
Desirable:
- Team Teach, MAPA or other de-escalation training (not essential – training can be provided)
- Previous work in a PRU, alternative provision, or specialist SEN setting
- First Aid and safeguarding training (or willingness to complete)
