Job Overview
West Lancashire Borough Council is seeking 2 Shunter Drivers to support the safe and efficient operation of the Council’s waste transfer station and depot.
The role will involve vehicle shunting, yard operations, weighbridge operation and general site support. The successful candidates will safely manoeuvre waste collection vehicles, trailers and associated plant around the depot and waste transfer station, ensuring safe traffic flow, correct vehicle positioning and compliance with health and safety procedures.
This role requires previous experience in a waste management, depot or similar operational environment, experience shunting or manoeuvring vehicles in a controlled yard environment, and an HGV licence, Category C or C+E.

This role requires an HGV driving licence, Category C or C+E, plus a Digital Tachograph Card, CPC Driving Qualification and LGV Driver Qualification Card / DQC.
Candidates must have experience of vehicle manoeuvring or shunting in a depot, yard, waste management or similar operational setting.
The role includes working outdoors, operating around moving vehicles, following strict health and safety procedures, using weighbridge systems or similar data-entry systems, and supporting waste transfer station operations.
Candidates without HGV Category C or C+E, valid driver cards and shunting or controlled-yard manoeuvring experience are unlikely to be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely shunt and manoeuvre waste collection vehicles, trailers and associated plant
- Position vehicles for loading, unloading, washing and maintenance activities
- Maintain safe traffic flow within the depot and waste transfer station
- Ensure segregation of pedestrians and vehicles at all times
- Conduct routine vehicle safety checks
- Report vehicle defects in line with Council fleet procedures
- Operate the site weighbridge system for inbound and outbound vehicles
- Record vehicle weights, waste types, origins and destinations accurately
- Issue weighbridge tickets and maintain electronic and manual records
- Resolve weighbridge or operational discrepancies with drivers, supervisors and managers
- Direct vehicles to designated tipping and loading areas
- Monitor waste loads for correct segregation
- Identify non-compliant or prohibited waste
- Assist with loading bulk haulage vehicles, containers or transfer trailers where required
- Maintain housekeeping and cleanliness standards across the site
- Follow risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work
- Comply with environmental permit conditions and Council environmental policies
- Wear and promote the correct use of PPE
- Report accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards and unsafe practices
- Support emergency arrangements including fire prevention, spill response and evacuation procedures
- Assist with routine site inspections and basic maintenance tasks
Essential Experience & Skills
- HGV driving licence, Category C or C+E

- Experience working in a waste management, depot, yard or similar operational environment
- Experience shunting or manoeuvring vehicles in a controlled yard environment
- Knowledge of health and safety requirements in high-risk operational environments
- Ability to follow procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work
- Basic IT skills, including data entry
- Ability to use or learn weighbridge or similar operational systems
- Good communication skills

Desirable
- Previous weighbridge operating experience
- Loading shovel certification
- FLT certification
- Telehandler certification

- Knowledge of waste types and segregation requirements
- Previous local authority or waste transfer station experience
Additional Information
The role is subject to medical assessment in line with Council policy.
The successful candidate must comply with Council policies including health and safety, data protection and environmental policies.
