Responsibilities
As a Quantity Surveyor, you'll be responsible for assisting with the control of costs, maximising value, minimising future liabilities and maintaining the required standard of quality and safety on a range of contracts.
Your day to day will include:
- Cost Estimation and Budgeting:
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for highway construction and maintenance projects.
- Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring that projects stay within financial constraints.
- Procurement:
- Manage the procurement process, including preparing tender documents, evaluating bids, and negotiating contracts with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Ensure that all materials and services required for the project are procured cost-effectively and on time.
- Cost Control and Monitoring:
- Track project expenses, report on any discrepancies or overages, and provide proactive solutions to keep costs under control.
- Maintain accurate records of costs, including labour, materials, and equipment.
- Risk Management:
- Identify potential risks and assess their financial implications on the project.
- Develop risk mitigation strategies to prevent cost overruns and delays.
- Project Progress Monitoring:
- Monitor the progress of ongoing projects, ensuring that they adhere to budget, timeline, and quality standards.
- Provide regular financial reports and updates to the project management team.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to ensure the smooth execution of projects.

Essential Skills:
- Knowledge of Construction and Highway Works: Familiarity with highway construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Strong Analytical and Mathematical Skills: Ability to accurately estimate costs and analyse financial data.
- Negotiation Skills: Proficiency in negotiating contracts and resolving disputes.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to monitor every aspect of a project to ensure it remains financially viable.
- Communication Skills: Effective in communicating complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
What are we looking for?
This role of Quantity Surveyor is great if you have:
Educational and Professional Requirements:
- A degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. (preferred)
- Membership in a professional body such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is preferred.
- Previous experience in a similar role, preferably within highways or civil engineering projects.
Work Environment:
- You will spend time in an office environment handling documentation, reports, and calculations.
This role is vital to the successful financial management of highway construction projects and requires a strong understanding of both the technical and financial aspects of construction.
