Early Years 1:1 SEN Support Assistant – Mainstream Primary School
We are looking for a caring, patient and reliable 1:1 SEN Support Assistant to support a young child in a mainstream primary school. The child is currently on the ASD diagnostic pathway and requires consistent, relationship-based support to help them engage, learn and thrive.
About the Role
You will work 1:1 with the child throughout the school day, helping them stay focused, regulated and safe. The child learns best through structure, repetition and clear routines, and enjoys numbers, letters, animal toys, outdoor play and sensory activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide constant 1:1 engagement and support
- Use visual aids, simple language and structured routines
- Support transitions between activities
- Offer two-choice visual options to aid communication
- Supervise closely during outdoor and physical play
- Support sensory needs and emotional regulation
- Maintain a calm, patient and consistent presence
About the Child
- Curious, energetic and sensory-seeking
- Communicates mainly through echolalia and Gestalt Language Processing
- May become overwhelmed in busy environments
- Uses a chew buddy for regulation and a harness for safety
What We’re Looking For
- Calm, emotionally attuned and dependable
- Confident working 1:1 for extended periods
- Comfortable supporting sensory needs and regulation
- Able to follow structured routines and use visual supports
- Experience with autism, SEN or sensory needs is beneficial but not essential
- A genuine interest in learning and supporting the child’s development
