Payroll Technical Advisor

Contract: Temporary – 6 Months
Hours: Monday to Friday, 5 Days per Week
Rate: £300.00 per day (PAYE)
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Payroll Technical Advisor to join a busy shared services payroll team during an exciting period of transformation.
This role is ideal for an experienced payroll professional with strong technical knowledge who can provide expert guidance on payroll legislation, support payroll system developments, and ensure the delivery of an accurate, compliant and efficient payroll service.
Working alongside senior payroll management, you will play a key role in supporting the transition from SAP to Oracle Fusion (Redwood), while maintaining business-as-usual payroll operations and helping deliver continuous service improvements.
What You'll Be Doing
- Act as the technical lead for payroll processes, ensuring compliance with current legislation and best practice
- Provide specialist payroll advice and resolve complex payroll queries
- Support the Payroll & Pensions Service Manager and deputise where required
- Work closely with Payroll, HR, Finance and Systems teams to improve payroll processes
- Support the implementation and development of payroll systems, including SAP and Oracle Fusion
- Interpret new payroll legislation and implement required process changes
- Liaise with HMRC, pension providers and other external stakeholders
- Prepare and maintain payroll timetables, reconciliations and operating procedures
- Coach and support payroll colleagues on technical payroll matters
- Participate in payroll improvement projects and service development initiatives
What We're Looking For, Essential
- Significant experience managing complex payroll processes
- Excellent knowledge of UK payroll legislation and statutory requirements
- Strong understanding of HMRC regulations and pension payroll
- Experience resolving complex payroll queries and technical issues
- Experience interpreting payroll legislation and implementing procedural changes
- Strong knowledge of SAP Payroll
- Excellent analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- High level of confidentiality when handling sensitive payroll information
- CIPP qualification (or equivalent payroll experience)
- Degree-level qualification or equivalent analytical experience (e.g. NVQ Level 4)
Desirable
- Experience supporting payroll system implementations or migrations
- Experience working within a Shared Service Centre
- Experience with Oracle Fusion (Redwood)
- Public sector payroll experience
