Job Purpose
At NEC Software Solutions, our Government team builds digital systems that help Government departments and local councils deliver essential public services from Revenues and Benefits, Citizen engagement and various diverse central government services.
As a Software Developer Apprentice, you’ll play a meaningful role in shaping technology that directly impacts communities across the UK. The apprenticeship is delivered as a series of seminars, workshops and learning projects leading to a software development L4 qualification. At the same time, you will be combining real-world experience with your professional development.
Apprenticeship Overview
Expected duration: 17 months
Apprenticeship level: Level 4 (Higher)
Programme: Software Developer
During this apprenticeship, you will follow a fully supported training programme with LearnTech, delivered through combined weekly remote classroom-based training, workplace assessment/training and online learning working towards completing the Software Developer.

Key responsibilities:
- Join a development team delivering software solutions for central and local government.
- Write, test and maintain code for web-based applications.
- Contribute to the full Software Development Life Cycle — from planning and coding to testing and deployment.
- Apply the skills gained during the apprenticeship to real NEC projects.
- Take part in team meetings, sprint planning and code reviews.
- Learn continuously through structured training, project work and mentoring.
Essential skills, characteristics and experience:
- A genuine passion for technology and solving problems.
- Some prior exposure to coding or digital systems (e.g. self-learning or online courses).
- Good communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
- Willingness to complete the programme.
- The right to work in the UK and eligibility for apprenticeship funding.
This apprenticeship is ideal for individuals at the start of their software development career, including:
- Career changers bringing transferable skills and a growing interest in coding.
- Early careers candidates, such as school or college leavers, seeking hands-on experience.
- Self-taught developers who’ve learned through online courses or personal projects and want to turn their passion into a profession.
- Due to current Government Apprenticeship guidelines, we are unfortunately unable to consider graduates that are already educated to a comparable or higher level than the Level 4 Apprenticeship.

Eligibility:
You must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply for the role:
- Have been a UK/EEA resident for the last 3 years
- Hold valid residency status
- Have the right to work in the UK
