Overview
The Clerk to the Council plays a vital organisational role within local government, providing comprehensive administrative support to the council and ensuring effective communication between councillors, officers, and the community. This paid position offers an opportunity to contribute to local governance through efficient management of meetings, records, and financial processes. The ideal candidate will possess strong management and organisational skills. A commitment to public service and excellent communication abilities are essential for success in this role.
The council is also recruiting for a Responsible Financial Officer (4 hours per week). Applicants are welcome to apply for either role individually or for both roles combined, subject to experience and suitability.
Responsibilities
- Organise and prepare agendas for council meetings, ensuring all necessary documentation is accurate and timely
- Attend council meetings, record minutes accurately, and distribute them promptly to relevant parties
- Manage correspondence on behalf of the council, including emails, letters, and official notices
- Oversee administrative functions such as maintaining records, filing systems, and document control
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements and local government regulations
- Liaise with community members, organisations, and other stakeholders to facilitate effective communication
- Support councillors in their duties by providing relevant information and administrative assistance
Qualifications
- Experience in management or leadership roles, ideally within an administrative or public sector environment
- Strong organisational skills with attention to detail and accuracy in record keeping
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision whilst maintaining a collaborative approach
- Knowledge of local government procedures and statutory requirements is desirable but not essential; training will be provided if necessary
