A private family is seeking a compassionate and engaging live-in carer for Dave, a 73-year-old gentleman with Alzheimer's disease. This is a permanent position offering 20-40 hours per week, including overnight shifts. The ideal candidate will be a friendly, chatty person who enjoys providing companionship and support, whilst assisting with personal care, household tasks, and daily living activities. The carer will live in the family home and work alongside Dave's wife to enable him to remain in his own home with the support he needs.
Key responsibilities
The carer will have the following responsibilities:
- Manage and administer medicines
- Support with hygiene and toileting needs, including assistance with incontinence care
- Help with mobility and moving around the home
- Undertake household tasks including cleaning and laundry
- Provide overnight reassurance and support (3 nights per week)
- Offer friendly companionship and emotional support

Age: 73
Medical conditions: Alzheimer's disease (progressing)
Dave is a fiercely intelligent man who remains intellectually engaged and enjoys reading, current affairs, music, and science. He is well-travelled and values spending time outdoors in the family garden. Dave's wife lives with him and is very involved in his care, though she requires support to manage his ongoing needs. Dave currently experiences night-time wakefulness and incontinence, requiring assistance with personal hygiene and changing disposable clothing.
Work environment
The carer will work in a smoke-free and pet-free family home with a spacious garden that Dave enjoys walking around. The home has adequate space to accommodate occasional visits from Dave's granddaughter and her family (two children aged 4 and 5, plus two dogs), with separate accommodation available for the carer during these visits.
Working pattern
20-40 hours per week, comprising:
- 3 nights per week (overnight shifts with reassurance provision)
- 4-5 hours of care across 5 days per week
Requirements
Essential:
- Fluent spoken English
- Valid UK driving licence
- Care Quality Commission (CQC) mandatory training
- Care Certificate
- A warm, friendly, and positive approach to care
- Excellent listening skills and ability to provide companionship
- Ability to be a friendly presence for Dave's wife as well as the client
