Job Purpose
To ensure items to be delivered are collected from pick-up points and reach their designated drop-off points quickly and in good condition. To work efficiently and safely across a variety of tasks. To assist with depot duties when needed, including administration and customer relations. To support the smooth running of the co-op (if interested in becoming a member after a probationary period).
Job Responsibilities
The main responsibilities include:
- Picking up packages from senders and delivering them to recipients
- Taking responsibility for high-value or confidential items
- Taking good-quality photos and providing relevant information as proof of delivery
- Answering questions and providing customer service to people who use ZED
- Working with dispatch to get to the right locations
- Working on a variety of different jobs (see "On a Typical Day..." below for more detail)
- Taking good care of the cargo bike you’re using
- Helping look after the ZED depot
- Championing the role of e-cargo bikes as a low-carbon delivery solution
- Undertaking hub coordination and other administrative duties as needed
Required Competencies
- Confident cyclist — able to ride a cargo bike safely on urban roads (training on cargo bike handling is provided)
- Full compliance with the Highway Code at all times (no exceptions)
- Able to operate a smartphone and its apps confidently for timesheets, navigation, and deliveries
- Able to safely carry a package weighing up to 10kg
Rider Specification
This role requires you to carry out deliveries and safely cycle a cargo bike throughout the Waltham Forest area on a variety of different routes and bike types.
There is a training programme for all new riders, and potential employees need to commit to being available for at least 6 months.
Riders Must Be:
- Self-motivated and reliable
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the year
- Able to meet the physical demands of the role, including cycling long distances, carrying loads up to 10kg, and using stairs as needed
- Confident using a smartphone and able to quickly become proficient with the apps required for timesheet recording, deliveries, and navigation
- Knowledgeable about and respectful of the Highway Code, and an ambassador for good cycling
- Prepared to work unsupervised for long periods and able to use their own initiative
- Able to communicate well over the phone and in person
- Punctual, trustworthy, and reliable
Desirable Attributes
- Good knowledge of the local area, cycle paths, and main business areas (route familiarisation can be provided as part of onboarding)
- Current first aid certificate
- Basic bike maintenance knowledge
- Comfortable riding a range of cargo bikes in an urban environment
- Good technical skills, including experience with spreadsheets and customer relations
- Interest in contributing to our workers’ co-operative and its governance
Hours of Work
Hours are usually between 9:00am and 5:00pm, with mornings being our peak time. We’re happy to discuss flexible arrangements to accommodate your circumstances.
Ideally, you’d be able to work with us for no less than 2 days per week, or 4 mornings per week.
We cannot guarantee levels of work — this position is based on current contract work and the need to respond to ad hoc jobs. However, we are aiming to provide as much work for our riders as they require, up to a 5-day working week (35-40 hours).
Compensation & Benefits
- Flexible-hours contract, PAYE, £16 per hour (freelance option also available at £16 per hour)
- Auto-enrolment in the NEST pension scheme
- We aim to offer a minimum 4-hour shift
- If your shift exceeds 4 hours, you receive a paid 30-minute break
- The opportunity to join our workers’ co-operative after successfully completing a 3-month probation period
Notes
We pay by the hour (rather than per package) so our team can take the time to offer great customer service and travel around Waltham Forest safely, reducing risks to themselves and the public.
On a Typical Day...
Our team may be:
- Delivering cakes to coffee shops
- Posting small packages through letterboxes
- Collecting and delivering large bags of naan bread
- Picking up hot food for 100 children and delivering it to a school
- Delivering flowers to customers
- Loading crates of organic vegetables and unloading them into on-street containers
- Ferrying several bikes between two locations
- Delivering gazebos, tables, and chairs
- Placing signage on lamp posts along an entire street and removing old signage
- Delivering letters to 200 properties in a street
