Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Workshop Mechanic (Semi Skilled) to join our team. The Workshop Mechanic (Semi-Skilled) provides essential support to the Garage team in the day-to-day maintenance, basic inspection, and upkeep of the Company's HGV fleet, including skip lorries, hookloaders, tippers, and associated vehicles used across waste management and recycling operations. Working under the supervision and guidance of the Garage Manager or a qualified Senior HGV Mechanic, the role assists with routine vehicle checks, minor repairs, and general workshop duties. The post holder is expected to develop their mechanical knowledge and skills over time, with a view to progressing within the workshop team.The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in mechanical work, with practical experience using hand and power tools.
Responsibilities
Basic Vehicle Inspections and Checks
- Carry out daily walkaround and basic pre-use inspections of HGV vehicles under supervision.
- Check and top up fluid levels including engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and AdBlue as required.
- Inspect tyres for wear, damage, and correct pressures and report findings to the senior mechanic.
- Check lights, mirrors, wipers, and other safety-related items as part of routine inspection.
- Identify and clearly report any defects, damage, or safety concerns to the Garage Manager promptly.
- Complete basic defect report forms and inspection records accurately and on time.
Workshop Support and Maintenance Assistance
- Assist qualified HGV Mechanics with servicing, repairs, and planned preventive maintenance tasks.
- Carry out minor repairs and replacements such as bulbs, filters, belts, and wiper blades under guidance.
- Support preparation of vehicles ahead of MOT inspections by assisting with rectification of identified minor defects.
- Assist with lubrication, greasing, and basic mechanical upkeep of vehicle components as directed.
- Help with the removal and fitting of wheels and tyres under the supervision of a qualified mechanic.
Workshop Operations and General Duties
- Maintain a clean, tidy, and organised workshop environment at all times.
- Assist with the movement of vehicles around the yard and workshop as required.
- Keep tools and equipment clean, stored correctly, and report any damaged or missing items.
- Support the team with stock checks and collection of parts and consumables as directed.
- Accurately complete all required worksheets, job cards, and inspection records.
Health, Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
- Comply with all Company health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
- Wear and use PPE correctly at all times within the workshop and operational yard.
- Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, or near misses to the Garage Manager immediately.
- Handle and dispose of oils, fluids, and hazardous waste in line with Company environmental procedures.
- Promote a safety-first culture and support colleagues in maintaining safe working practices.
Requirements
- Some practical experience working in a workshop, garage, or vehicle maintenance environment, including relevant work placement or apprenticeship experience.
- Basic understanding of HGV or commercial vehicle components and mechanical systems.
- Ability to carry out routine walkaround inspections and identify common vehicle defects.
- Willingness to learn and develop mechanical skills under the guidance of qualified mechanics.
- Good attention to detail with the ability to complete records and documentation accurately.
- Physically fit to carry out manual tasks including lifting, bending, and working in confined spaces.
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to maintaining a safe and tidy working environment.
- Basic understanding of health and safety responsibilities in a workshop setting.
- Full UK driving licence (preferred but not essential depending on experience).

Pay: £30,000.00-£40,000.00 per year
