About the Role
Are you practical, reliable and proactive, with a good all-round knowledge of general maintenance?
We are looking for a Maintenance Operative to support our children’s residential care homes across the Swansea and Neath area. This is an important role within our organisation, helping us to maintain safe, welcoming and well-presented homes for the children and young people in our care.
You will be responsible for carrying out a range of general maintenance tasks, identifying repairs, supporting Health & Safety standards and ensuring our homes, grounds and vehicles are maintained to a high standard.
A maintenance van will be provided for company business use.
Job Purpose
To maintain our care homes, grounds, buildings and services in a safe, efficient and functional condition, helping to provide the highest standards of safety, comfort and presentation for children, staff and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance
You will carry out a range of general maintenance tasks across our homes, which may include:
· Decorating, basic repairs and touch-up works
· Minor plumbing, joinery, tiling and general maintenance
· Basic electrical tasks such as replacing light bulbs
· Maintaining ventilation units and reporting any concerns
· Inspecting properties and reporting defects or potential hazards
· Maintaining external areas, including gardens, driveways, paths and waste areas
· Grass cutting, tending flowerbeds and general grounds maintenance
· Snow clearing and gritting pathways when required
· Supporting with furniture movement, deliveries and other practical tasks
· Supporting logistical needs linked to fleet vehicles and maintenance supplies
· Ensuring COSHH products are stored and managed safely
Health & Safety
You will be expected to:
· Follow company Health & Safety policies and procedures
· Support fire safety, emergency procedures and general safety standards within the homes
· Identify and report any risks, hazards or defects promptly
· Safely use, manage and store maintenance equipment and materials
· Support the reduction of non-essential energy use where appropriate
Communication and Teamwork
You will work closely with the Health & Safety and Maintenance Manager, Home Managers and staff teams to ensure maintenance work is completed effectively and with minimal disruption to the homes.
You will need to be approachable, professional and respectful, understanding that you will be working in children’s homes where safety, consistency and a positive environment are essential.
Training and Development
You will be required to complete mandatory training and keep your knowledge and skills up to date in line with the requirements of the role.
Essential Requirements
We are looking for someone who has:
· Experience in general maintenance, such as basic plumbing, joinery, decorating, repairs or similar practical work
· A full manual UK driving licence, ideally with fewer than 6 points
· Willingness to travel across the Swansea, Neath and surrounding areas
· Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a varied workload
· Good communication skills
· A proactive and practical approach to problem-solving
· A friendly, flexible and team-focused attitude
· The right to work in the UK
· Satisfactory references and DBS checks
Desirable
It would be helpful if you also have:
· Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements, including COSHH
· Experience of working in residential care, education, housing, facilities or a similar setting
· Basic understanding of central heating, water systems, laundry equipment or building services

Pay: £28,875.00 per year
