About the role
As a Construction Manager, you will lead the delivery of cabling and substation projects across the Sheffield region, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
You will take full ownership of site activities, managing multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors while driving programme, cost and performance outcomes.
This role requires strong technical expertise in HV cabling and substation construction, alongside proven leadership capability to deliver complex infrastructure works.
What you'll be doing
- Plan, manage and coordinate all on-site construction activities across cabling and substation works
- Deliver works safely to programme, budget and quality requirements
- Ensure resource levels, plant and materials are aligned with programme demands
- Lead construction reviews, monitor performance and drive continuous improvement
- Ensure robust reporting, record keeping and governance processes are maintained
- Oversee installation of HV/LV cable systems including trenching, ducting, pulling and jointing
- Manage substation construction including civils, steelwork, plant installation and electrical fit-out
- Ensure technical drawings, specifications and designs are accurately implemented on site
- Lead buildability assessments and drive efficient construction methodologies
- Lead and promote a strong Zero Harm culture across all site operations
- Ensure compliance with all HSE legislation and company procedures
- Review and approve RAMS and safe systems of work
- Conduct regular safety tours, audits and behavioural safety initiatives
- Ensure workforce competence, welfare and adherence to safety standards
- Take ownership of budgets and ensure effective cost control across site activities
- Manage subcontractors to ensure delivery against contractual requirements
- Identify risks, issues and opportunities and drive mitigation strategies
- Support change management and ensure commercial impacts are understood
- Ensure programme milestones and deliverables are achieved
- Lead, motivate and develop high-performing site teams including Site Managers, Engineers and Supervisors
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders and supply chain partners
- Provide clear direction, coaching and mentoring to team members
- Drive collaboration across project functions to achieve common goals
- Ensure all works meet required quality standards and specifications
- Oversee audits, inspections and assurance activities
- Ensure effective handover and certification of completed works
- Drive continuous improvement and performance across the project
- Proven experience as a Construction Manager on cabling and substation projects
- Strong background in HV/LV cable installation and substation construction
- Demonstrable track record of delivering large-scale infrastructure projects
- Experience managing subcontractors and multidisciplinary site teams
- Strong understanding of programme, cost control and risk management
- Experience implementing and managing safe systems of work
- Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills
Who we're looking for
- CSCS Card (essential)
- SMSTS or equivalent (essential)
- Engineering or construction-related qualification (desirable)
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Experience working on National Grid, DNO or major T&D frameworks
- Knowledge of substation plant and equipment installation
- Experience on major infrastructure or power transmission projects
- Familiarity with digital construction tools and reporting systems
