Job purpose
To ensure the care home environment is safe, well-maintained, and fully functional for residents, staff, and visitors. You will carry out routine maintenance, repairs, and health & safety checks across the building and grounds.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out general repairs including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and decorating tasks
- Perform routine maintenance of fixtures, fittings, and equipment throughout the care home
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff and management
- Carry out regular health & safety checks (e.g., fire alarms, emergency lighting, water temperature checks)
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding, infection control, and health & safety regulations
- Maintain outdoor areas including pathways, gardens, and waste storage areas
- Liaise with external contractors and supervise repair work when required
- Keep accurate maintenance records and logs of inspections and repairs
- Identify and report any major faults or hazards to the Home Manager
- Ensure equipment (e.g., beds, hoists, call systems) is safe and in good working order
Person specification
- Previous maintenance or handyman experience (care home or healthcare setting preferred)
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrics, carpentry, and general building maintenance
- Understanding of health & safety regulations
- Ability to prioritise urgent tasks in a busy environment
- Good communication skills and a respectful approach to elderly residents
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- DBS check required (due to working with vulnerable adults)
Desirable skills
- Experience working in a care home, hospital, or supported living environment
- Knowledge of Legionella prevention checks and fire safety systems
- Relevant trade qualification (e.g., NVQ, City & Guilds)
- PAT testing certification (or willingness to train)
Working conditions
- Based within a residential care home setting
- May involve on-call or emergency maintenance duties
- Physical work including lifting, bending, and working at height
- Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals and maintenance materials
