Job Title: Child & Youth Mentor / Sessional Support Child & Youth Mentor
Location: BCP (Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole) Area – On the road / Community-based
Job Type: Part-time / Self-employed (Subcontractor Bank)
Salary: £20.00 - £30.00 per hour (Dependent on experience and expense choices)
About Us: At EMASS (Elevate Mentoring and Support Services), we believe in meeting young people exactly where they are. We partner with local authorities across the BCP area to provide bespoke alternative provision and mentoring for children and young people aged 6 to 25 who need a different approach to thrive. Our mission is simple: Elevate the child. Elevate their world. Elevate their future.
Due to a rapid increase in framework referrals, we are expanding our trusted "bank" of sessional mentors.
Job Summary: This isn't a classroom-based role. We are seeking dedicated, resilient Child and Youth Mentors to support young individuals out in the community and in designated local spaces. This position offers an opportunity to make a profound impact by providing 1:1 guidance, encouragement, and mentorship to children and adolescents facing various social, emotional, or educational challenges.
Salary & Expense Options: We offer a flexible, tiered pay structure depending on your experience and how you prefer to manage your session costs:
- Option A (£20.00 - £25.00/hr + Activity Budget): Perfect if you prefer a steady base rate. You will be allocated a set maximum budget per session (depending on the activity) to cover youth enrichment costs (e.g., snacks, entry fees). You pay for these during the session and invoice them back to us to be reimbursed.
- Option B (Up to £30.00/hr - All-Inclusive): Perfect for highly experienced, independent subcontractors who prefer a premium, flat hourly rate and are happy to fully cover their session activity expenses out of that rate.
Responsibilities:
- Build Trust: Develop strong, trusting relationships with children and young people through active listening, unshockable empathy, and consistent engagement.
- Bespoke Support: Deliver tailored 1:1 mentoring sessions out in the community that promote personal, social, and emotional development.
- Life Skills & Resilience: Support young people in developing life skills, confidence, and coping mechanisms through organized community activities, helping them confidently re-engage with their world.
- Collaborate: Work alongside the EMASS leadership team, and where necessary, communicate professionally with families or social care/SEN teams to ensure holistic support.
- Record Keeping: Proactively monitor progress and maintain accurate, timely records of your sessions, mapping out challenges and achievements.
- Safeguarding: Promote a fiercely safe environment by strictly adhering to safeguarding policies and procedures at all times.
Skills & Requirements:
- Experience: Proven experience in youth work, alternative provision, social care, or mentoring roles.
- Mindset: Deeply empathetic, patient, and resilient. You fundamentally understand that "challenging behavior" is simply a form of communication.
- Independence: Highly organized with the confidence to work independently out in the field while keeping accurate professional records.
- Mandatory Logistics: You must hold a full UK driving license with access to a vehicle for community travel, and be entirely willing to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.
