Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Chef in the preparation and cooking of meals for residents
- Prepare vegetables, ingredients and food items as directed, following recipes and portion guidelines
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in food preparation areas
- Wash, dry and store kitchen equipment, utensils and crockery appropriately
- Manage kitchen waste and recycling in accordance with health and safety standards
- Support food storage and ensure ingredients are properly rotated (FIFO principle)
- Assist with inventory checks and report when supplies are running low
- Follow food safety and hygiene protocols at all times, including handwashing and food handling
- Support the preparation of special meals and dietary modifications as instructed
- Help maintain the kitchen in a safe and organised condition
- Follow COSHH regulations for safe handling of cleaning materials and chemicals
- Assist with serving meals when required and clear dining areas after mealtimes
- Report any concerns regarding food safety, pest control or kitchen equipment faults
- Participate in food hygiene and health and safety training
- Support special events and themed meals as required
- Work flexibly to meet the demands of the care home kitchen
Person SpecificationEssential Criteria
- Experience working in a kitchen or food preparation environment (minimum 2 years)
- Food Hygiene Certification (Level 1 minimum or willingness to obtain within 3 months)
- Good understanding of basic food safety and hygiene practices
- Ability to follow instructions and maintain standards
- Reliability and punctuality
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Good physical stamina and fitness
- Enhanced DBS clearance (no safeguarding concerns)
- Right to work in the UK
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in a healthcare or care home kitchen
- Food Hygiene Level 2 certification
- Knowledge of catering or hospitality
- Customer service or hospitality qualifications
- Flexibility to work shifts as required
- Understanding of specialist dietary requirements (diabetic, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.)
Terms and Conditions
This is a regulated care home. All staff are required to comply with Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014, CQC registration requirements, and all care home policies and procedures. An Enhanced DBS clearance is mandatory. All staff must engage in mandatory training and professional development.
