We are looking for a highly organised, politically aware and proactive individual to join us as Political Assistant to the Labour Group. This is a unique opportunity to support the Labour Group Leader and Labour Group Members, helping them to carry out their political duties effectively and efficiently within a fast-paced local government environment.
Working closely with elected members, you will provide high-quality research, administrative and organisational support, helping to coordinate meetings, prepare briefings, draft speeches and statements, and monitor political and policy developments that affect the borough.
The role is central to ensuring the Group is well informed, well organised and able to respond effectively to local, regional and national issues.
You will support the Labour Group with the organisation of meetings, agendas, papers, minutes and follow-up actions. Undertake research, prepare briefings and help draft speeches, statements, motions and questions. Monitor council business, policy developments and wider political activity, highlighting issues of interest to the Group. Build effective working relationships with councillors, officers and external stakeholders. Support communications activity, including social media content and political messaging where appropriate.
You will bring strong administrative and organisational skills, excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to work with discretion in a politically sensitive environment. You will also have a clear interest in politics and local government, together with the confidence to build relationships and manage competing priorities.
Experience providing administrative, research or communications support. Knowledge of Labour Party policy and an understanding of the wider political landscape.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders. Good digital skills, including Microsoft Office and social media platforms. The flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends and public holidays when required.
This is a full-time post, on a fixed term contract until May 2030. This post is politically restricted under the provisions of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.
If you are looking for a varied and rewarding role at the heart of local politics, and you have the skills, judgement and commitment to support elected members effectively, we would welcome your application.
