About the Role
We are seeking a resilient, compassionate, and committed SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming secondary school in Salford. This is a long-term temporary position with the opportunity to become permanent for the right candidate. The role involves working with students aged 11–16 who present with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including trauma, anxiety, and behaviours that may challenge.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing 1:1 support for students with SEMH needs
- Supporting pupils in and out of the classroom to access learning
- Managing and de-escalating behaviours that challenge in a calm and professional manner
- Building strong, trusting relationships with students to encourage engagement
- Supporting learning in class alongside teaching staff
- Encouraging positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and social development
- Working closely with pastoral teams, SEN staff, and external professionals
- Promoting a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment
About You
We are looking for someone who is patient, resilient, and confident working with young people who may present with complex emotional and behavioural needs. Previous experience working with SEMH is highly desirable, however we also welcome applicants with transferable skills from youth work, care work, residential support, sports coaching, or behaviour support roles.
You must be comfortable working with behaviours that challenge and able to remain calm under pressure while maintaining professional boundaries and consistency.
