Engineering Lead & Trainer

Monday – Friday, 6:45am – 3:00pm
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Lead & Trainer to join a fast-paced manufacturing environment in the Durham area. This is a key leadership role, acting as the link between operations and management to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable performance of plant and equipment.
You will provide hands-on technical support, lead and develop a team of engineers and apprentices, and drive a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and high performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and support the engineering team on shift, promoting a strong team culture
- Coach, mentor, and develop engineers and apprentices
- Support delivery of training plans and skills development programmes
- Work closely with management on performance and people-related matters
Operations, Safety & Compliance
- Coordinate engineering resources to maintain continuous plant operation
- Act as the main point of contact for breakdowns and prioritise workload
- Ensure clear communication across shifts and departments
- Maintain high standards of Health & Safety, food safety, and compliance
- Issue permits to work and ensure safe systems of work are followed
- Promote strong housekeeping and audit readiness
Maintenance & Continuous Improvement
- Carry out hands-on maintenance (reactive and planned)
- Accurately log work and faults via CMMS systems
- Support root cause analysis (RCA) and downtime reduction activities
- Work with operations to improve machine performance and reliability
- Contribute to maintenance planning and engineering standards
Apprenticeship & Development
- Lead and manage the engineering apprenticeship programme
- Provide day-to-day coaching and structured development
- Monitor progress and support End Point Assessments (EPA)
- Maintain training records and conduct regular reviews
About You
- Multi-skilled engineer (mechanical and electrical)
- Proven experience in a leadership or senior engineering role
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Experience working in a Manufacturing / FMCG environment
- Knowledge of Health & Safety, food safety, and compliance standards
- Passion for developing others and building high-performing teams
- Experience with CMMS systems and continuous improvement tools
