Hours: 20 hours per week hours.
Monday: 08:30 – 17:30 (1-hour unpaid break)
Wednesday: 08:30 – 17:30 (1-hour unpaid break)
Thursday: 08:30 – 12:30

The Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Prescription Clerk to join our busy GP practice team. You will be responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely processing of all prescription requests within the practice. You will act as the central administrative link between patients, clinicians, pharmacies, and external agencies in relation to repeat medication requests and prescription queries.
Key responsibilities include:
Prescription Processing
· Accurately receive, review, and process all repeat prescription requests via online systems, in person, by phone, or from pharmacies.
· Use the practice clinical system (SystmOne) to generate repeat prescriptions in accordance with agreed practice protocols and patient medication reviews.
· Check that requested medicines are on the patient’s repeat list, and that review and monitoring requirements are up to date before issuing.
· Identify potential discrepancies or safety concerns (e.g., high-risk drugs, duplicate requests, early requests) and refer to the GP or appropriate clinician.
· Support electronic prescription service (EPS) and electronic repeat dispensing (eRD) processes.
· Liaise with community pharmacies to resolve EPS queries and prescription tracking issues.
Patient and Pharmacy Liaison
· Respond to patient and pharmacy queries regarding prescription status, medication availability, or repeat intervals, ensuring a polite, confidential, and professional manner.
· Provide clear information on practice prescribing policies and timescales.
· Escalate complex clinical queries appropriately to the duty GP, pharmacist, or prescribing lead.
· Support housebound and care home prescription arrangements in line with practice processes.
· Prepare and submit end-of-month reports to the Prescribing Pricing Authority.
· Order personally administered medications and associated supplies for designated clinics.
- Please notethe Prescription Clerk does not make clinical decisions about medication changes or initiation. The role is administrative and involves triaging and escalation of prescription issues to appropriate clinicians.
Requirements
- Previous experience in an administrative role in a GP practice or pharmacy
- IT proficient - Experience using clinical system SystmOne
- Awareness of NHS repeat prescribing processes
- Knowledge of Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)
- Awareness of data protection and confidentiality
- Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent), including English
- AMSPAR / City & Guilds Medical Administration Level 2–3 (Desirable)
- CPPE Medicines Safety or Repeat Dispensing modules (Desirable)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Eligible to work in the UK
