In collaboration with ATU Donegal through the Innovation Boost programme, Viltra is developing an IoT-enabled monitoring platform to deliver real-time performance insights and early-fault diagnostics for treatment installations. This initiative offers a unique opportunity for a graduate engineer to apply digital technologies to environmental infrastructure and contribute to the next generation of smart-water systems.
Job Description
Reporting to the Operations Manager and working closely with ATU Donegal’s WiSAR research team, the Automation/IoT Systems Engineer will lead the design, development and deployment of the new real-time monitoring product for wastewater treatment plants.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop IoT-enabled hardware and software for process monitoring and fault detection.
- Build and test sensor integration, data logging and communication modules.
- Develop cloud database and dashboard visualisation tools for remote diagnostics.
- Conduct live system testing and data validation on pilot plants.
- Collaborate with academic partners on algorithm design for anomaly detection.
- Prepare technical documentation, user manuals and training materials.
- Support knowledge transfer and staff training within Viltra post-project.
- Ensure compliance with CE marking and data-protection requirements.
The successful graduate will lead this project, in a supportive partnership with Atlantic Technological University as part of the InterTradeIreland Innovation Boost Programme.

Essential Criteria:
- Min 2.2 Honours Degree in Mechatronics, Electronic Engineering, or Computing (Instrumentation focus), or related discipline.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in instrumentation, automation or IoT systems.
- Proficiency in Python or Node.js for sensor data processing and system integration.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Northern Ireland/UK and travel throughout the island of Ireland if required; if you do require a visa/work permit allowing you to work in Northern Ireland/UK you must upload a copy of it with your application. Failure to provide a relevant Visa/Work permit may result in your application not being considered.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience with water or wastewater treatment control systems.
- Knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure/AWS) and data visualisation dashboards.
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g. Modbus, MQTT).
- Understanding of environmental monitoring and compliance reporting.
- Demonstrated project management or cross-functional team skills.
- Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
Pay: £34,000.00 per year
