The Role
As a Tug Driver (Shunter), you will be responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers throughout the yard and dock areas, ensuring operational schedules are maintained and all work is completed in accordance with site procedures and health and safety regulations.
The successful candidate will be working within a fast-paced transport environment where flexibility, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely move trailers around the yard, dock, and operational areas.
- Couple and uncouple trailers in line with site procedures.
- Carry out curtain-side trailer operations when required.
- Secure loads and perform trapping duties to ensure load stability and compliance.
- Support cross-dock activities and warehouse-related trailer movements.
- Conduct routine vehicle and equipment checks where applicable.
- Maintain accurate communication with operational teams and supervisors.
- Adhere to all health and safety policies, site rules, and operational procedures.
- Assist in maintaining a safe, organised, and efficient working environment.
Skills and Experience
- Must hold a valid UK Category C+E (Class 1) Driving Licence.
- Valid Driver CPC and Digital Tachograph Card preferred.
- Previous experience as a Tug Driver, Shunter, Yard Operative, Port Operative, or within a transport and logistics environment is preferred.
- Experience working within docks, ports, distribution centres, transport yards, or similar operational environments.
- Knowledge of trailer coupling and uncoupling procedures.
- Understanding of load securing and trailer safety requirements.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a busy operational setting.
- Strong awareness of health and safety regulations and safe working practices.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
