Job Summary/Purpose:
We are seeking for an individual to undertake a structured Level 3 Engineering (GOLD) Food Industry Maintenance Engineering Apprenticeship, gaining knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become a competent multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer within a fast-paced food manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Learning & development – attend South West Regional College as required. Complete all elements of the apprenticeship programme including BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering, NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Engineering Maintenance (Electrical & Mechanical). The individual must participate in training, assignments and assessments.
Assist in carrying out planned preventative maintenance – support the engineering team in completing scheduled maintenance activities on a wide range of production equipment to prevent breakdowns.
Support with fault finding, diagnosis and repair of mechanical and electrical systems – work alongside engineers to identify the root cause of equipment faults. Assist in troubleshooting issues using a logical and systematic approach. Participate in carrying out repairs on mechanical components (e.g. conveyors, pumps, gearboxes) and electrical systems (e.g. sensors, motors, wiring), ensuring minimal disruption to production.
Learn to maintain and optimise food production equipment and processes - Gain hands-on experience maintaining machinery used in food processing, packaging, and handling. Learn how equipment performance impacts product quality, safety, and efficiency. Support continuous improvement activities aimed at optimising line performance, reducing waste, and ensuring compliance with food industry standards and operational requirements.
Assist in installation and testing equipment - Provide support during the installation of new machinery or upgrades to existing systems. Assist with setting up equipment, performing basic testing, and ensuring systems are functioning correctly before full production use. Learn commissioning processes, including safety checks, calibration, and documentation.
Develop skills in electrical wiring, mechanical fitting and machining processes - Build practical technical skills through on-the-job training and college learning, including basic electrical installation, safe isolation procedures, mechanical assembly, bench fitting, and machining techniques. Develop competence in using engineering tools, measuring equipment, and workshop machinery in a safe and controlled manner.
Work alongside engineers to minimise downtown and support production efficiency - Collaborate with the maintenance team to respond to breakdowns quickly and effectively. Assist in prioritising tasks to ensure production targets are met while maintaining safety and quality standards. Develop an understanding of how maintenance performance contributes to overall operational efficiency and business success.
Qualifications Required:
· Minimum of 6 GCSEs (A-C*) including Maths and English (or equivalent)
· Strong interest in engineering, maintenance or mechanical/electrical systems
· Willingness to learn and commit to a multi-year apprenticeship programme as required (4 years).
· Good communication and teamwork skills
· Ability to follow instructions and work safely in a food manufacturing facility.
