Senior Legal Cashier / Legal Accountant

Borlase & Co Solicitors is a long-established and respected law firm serving clients throughout Cornwall and beyond. Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Senior Legal Cashier / Legal Accountant to take a leading role within our accounts department and support the ongoing financial management of the firm.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Legal Cashier, Legal Accountant, Finance Manager or Bookkeeper looking for a varied and responsible position within a supportive and forward-thinking practice.
The Role
You will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the firm's client and office accounts, ensuring full compliance with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Accounts Rules and maintaining accurate financial records.
Working closely with the Partners and external accountants, you will play a key role in the financial management of the practice and help ensure the smooth running of the firm's accounting functions.
Key Responsibilities
Client and Office Accounts
- Managing client and office accounts in accordance with the SRA Accounts Rules.
- Processing client receipts, payments, transfers and banking transactions.
- Handling property completion monies and associated accounting processes.
- Managing designated client accounts and deposit accounts.
- Monitoring client balances and residual balances.
- Processing interest calculations and account transfers.
Financial Management
- Performing daily, weekly and monthly bank reconciliations.
- Managing purchase ledger and supplier payments.
- Processing bills, disbursements and credit notes.
- Assisting with month-end and year-end accounting procedures.
- Preparing financial reports and management information for the Partners.
- Assisting with budgeting and cash flow monitoring.
- Supporting annual accounts preparation and year-end processes.
Compliance and Regulatory Matters
- Ensuring compliance with the SRA Accounts Rules and internal financial controls.
- Supporting annual accountant's reports and regulatory audits.
- Maintaining compliance with anti-money laundering and financial regulatory requirements.
- Assisting with internal compliance procedures and financial risk management.
- Liaising with external accountants, auditors and banking providers as required.
Payroll and Administration
- Processing payroll and pension administration.
- Maintaining accurate accounting and financial records.
- Supporting the implementation and improvement of financial systems and processes.
- Assisting with other finance and administrative duties as required.
About You
You may already be an experienced Legal Cashier, or you may have a background in bookkeeping, accounting or finance and be looking to develop your career within a law firm.
Experience of legal accounting procedures and the Solicitors Accounts Rules would be beneficial but is not essential, as full training can be provided.
You will be organised, proactive and capable of working independently whilst maintaining exceptional levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
Essential Requirements
- Experience managing both client and office accounts.
- Strong bookkeeping and accounting skills.
- Experience conducting bank reconciliations and financial reporting.
- Payroll administration experience.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office and accounting software.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Professional and confidential approach to sensitive and confidential financial information.
Desirable Requirements
- Previous experience within a solicitor's practice.
- Understanding of the SRA Accounts Rules.
- Experience using Xerox or similar accounting systems.
- AAT or ACCA qualification or equivalent accounting qualification.
- Experience producing management accounts.
- Experience supporting practice management and compliance functions.
- Experience working closely with Partners, Directors or senior management teams.
- Experience within a multi-disciplinary legal practice.
