Coding & Computing Tutor – SEND Experience Welcome

Tutor Doctor Bolton West

Westhoughton / Bolton / Wigan / Atherton / Hindley area Part-time | Freelance / Self-employed

£15 - £25 per hour depending on experience, subject knowledge and suitability

About the role

Tutor Doctor Bolton West is looking for patient, engaging and knowledgeable Coding & Computing Tutors to support students across Westhoughton, Bolton, Wigan, Atherton, Hindley and the surrounding areas.

We are building a local network of tutors who can support students with coding, computing, digital skills and computer science. This may include students studying computing at school or college, students interested in learning to code for personal development, or students who would benefit from a more practical, project-based approach to learning.

Some students may also have additional learning needs, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety or other SEND needs, so experience supporting neurodiverse learners would be very valuable.

This is an in-person tutoring role, so applicants must be local to the area or able to travel reliably to students’ homes.

What we are looking for

We are looking for tutors who can support with one or more of the following areas: -

Coding and programming fundamentals - Python, JavaScript, Scratch, HTML/CSS or similar

- Computer Science concepts - GCSE or A Level Computer Science

- Digital skills and confidence

- Problem solving and computational thinking - Project-based learning

- Games, websites, apps or creative coding projects

- Study skills, organisation and confidence around learning

The right tutor does not necessarily need to be a qualified teacher, although teaching experience would be welcome. We are also interested in applications from computing graduates, software developers, coding instructors, experienced tutors, SEND specialists, teaching assistants or people with strong real-world coding experience who can communicate well with young people.

Essential requirements

Applicants must:

- Have strong knowledge of coding, computing or computer science

- Be confident explaining technical ideas in a clear and accessible way

- Be patient, reliable, encouraging and professional

- Be able to adapt sessions around a student’s needs, interests and pace

- Be able to build rapport with young people

- Be available for in-person tutoring in the local area

- Have, or be willing to obtain, an enhanced DBS check

- Be able to provide references Desirable experience

The following would be beneficial but not essential:

- Experience working with autistic or neurodiverse learners

- Experience supporting students with SEND

- Experience with GCSE or A Level Computer Science

- Experience with post-16 students

- Background in Computer Science, IT, software development or digital skills

- Experience teaching Python, web development, games development or creative coding

- Experience with EHCPs, mentoring, alternative provision or specialist education What tutoring may involve Sessions may include:

- Helping students understand coding and computing concepts

- Building confidence through practical tasks

- Creating small projects based on the student’s interests

- Supporting school or college computer science work

- Explaining concepts step by step

- Helping students develop independence and problem-solving skills

- Supporting focus, organisation and confidence

- Encouraging curiosity and enjoyment around technology

- Helping students explore future pathways linked to coding, computing or digital work

The aim is to make learning feel useful, accessible and engaging rather than formal, pressured or overwhelming.

About Tutor Doctor

Tutor Doctor provides personalised one-to-one tutoring for students in their homes and online. We carefully match tutors based not only on subject knowledge, but also personality, learning style and the student’s individual needs. As a tutor, you are not simply given a name and left to get on with it. You will be briefed properly on each student’s needs, supported throughout the programme and matched only where we believe there is a strong fit. Pay Pay will be agreed based on experience, subject knowledge and the specific nature of each assignment.

Typical rate: £15-25 per hour

Location

This is an in-person role covering the Tutor Doctor Bolton West territory, including: - Westhoughton - Hindley - Atherton - Bolton - Wigan - Leigh and surrounding areas Applicants must be able to travel reliably to students’ homes.
