About Kilmarnock YMCA

Kilmarnock YMCA is a community-based charity dedicated to empowering children, young people, adults, and families across East Ayrshire. We promote wellbeing, inclusion, and opportunity through a wide range of programmes, including youth activities, health and wellbeing initiatives, and our Climate Action project.

We are now seeking a motivated and organised ACTIVE YOUTH WORKER with a passion for youth engagement, physical activity, sports, and community development. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, communicates effectively, and is excited to plan and deliver high-quality, intentionally developmental youth work through sports, games, and active leisure.

Job Purpose

The Active Youth Worker will work closely with a YMCA Board Subgroup to develop and deliver active youth work provisions in schools and communities across East Ayrshire.

You will inspire young people aged 5–18, alongside community participants of all ages, to engage meaningfully with physical activity. By utilising sports, active play, and team-based activities as a primary vehicle for informal education, you will support confidence, skills development, resilience, mental and physical wellbeing, and positive relationships in line with Scottish youth work principles and YMCA values.

Key Responsibilities1. Project Design & Delivery

You will:

Plan, deliver, and evaluate high-quality, active youth work sessions (including evenings, weekends, and holiday programmes) that have clear developmental aims and outcomes.
Utilise sports, fitness, team games, and active leisure activities as dynamic tools for informal education, relationship-building, and personal development.
Contribute to comprehensive session planning, robust risk assessments (with specific attention to physical activity safety), and attendance recording.
Support project development based on young people’s needs and interests, ensuring fully inclusive and accessible provision for all abilities and fitness levels.
Facilitate interactive active workshops and sports-based sessions in local schools.
Deliver activities promoting physical and mental wellbeing, inclusion, leadership, and personal growth.
Coordinate with community partners for active events, sports tournaments, and outreach activity.
Track project progress and report outcomes to the Board Subgroup.
Support monitoring and evaluation requirements for Kilmarnock YMCA, project funders, and stakeholders.

2. Young Person Support

You will:

Provide guidance and encouragement in line with the 6SQuID Model (training provided).
Promote positive behaviour, inclusion, teamwork, and respect during high-energy active sessions.
Build trusting, positive, and professional relationships with young people based on trust and consistency.
Support young people to achieve a Hi5 Award through their active participation.
Support young people to develop communication, leadership, and decision-making skills through collaborative games, team sports, and peer-coaching opportunities.

3. Safeguarding & Safety

You will:

Ensure all active and community-based activities follow YMCA safeguarding policies.
Adhere to Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) requirements.
Maintain safe, inclusive, and psychologically and physically safe environments for all participants, managing dynamic risks associated with physical activity, facility/pitch conditions, and equipment.
Ensure physical safety during active sessions by managing first aid requirements, monitoring physical exertion, and responding appropriately to injuries.

4. Teamwork & Communication

You will:

Work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers, partner organisations, and other YMCA partners.
Attend team meetings and training as required.
Represent Kilmarnock YMCA positively within the local community.

Person SpecificationEssential Knowledge and Experience

Qualification in youth work, community learning and development (CLD), sports coaching, social care, or a related field (or willingness to work towards one).
Experience working with children and young people in a paid or voluntary capacity.
Experience of planning and delivering engaging group sessions, specifically sports, fitness, team games, or active leisure programmes.
Understanding of the principles and values of youth work in Scotland.
Strong communication skills and the ability to motivate, inspire, and build rapport with diverse groups of young people.
Understanding of youth development, inclusion, and trauma-informed practice (or willingness to complete trauma-informed training).
Strong teamwork, flexibility, and problem-solving skills.
Current First Aid qualification or willingness to obtain one.
PVG membership (or willingness to obtain).
Willingness to work evenings and occasional weekends.

Desirable

Experience or strong interest in delivering holistic health/wellbeing initiatives, digital skills, alongside physical activities.
Mental Health First Aid training.
Experience working with vulnerable, at-risk, or disadvantaged young people.
Experience supporting volunteers, peer leaders, or sports captains.
Experience of monitoring outcomes and evidencing impact for funded programmes.
Full UK driving licence and access to transport.

Additional Information

Working hours will include evenings and weekends depending on project needs.
Hours will be allocated in line with project requirements.
Occasional travel across East Ayrshire may be required.
This post is subject to PVG checks and satisfactory references.

Pay: £13.10 per hour
