About the Role
The Ultra Sonic Test Operator is a key member of the Forge function, reporting to the Process Leader, with responsibility for ensuring forged components meet stringent customer specifications through the detection of internal defects using Ultrasonic Testing (UST) techniques.
This role is critical to maintaining product integrity within a high-compliance aerospace manufacturing environment. You will carry out inspection activities in line with production schedules and daily targets, ensuring timely and accurate identification of defects while supporting the business in meeting its Quality Management System and customer requirements.
You will contribute to the maintenance of Nadcap NDT special process accreditation and support continuous improvement initiatives across the function. The role requires precision, accountability, and a quality-focused mindset, alongside the ability to operate within a structured, audit-driven environment.
As a condition of employment successful candidates are required to satisfy ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliance and must fulfil the following before commencing this role:
i. Currently hold the legal Right to Work in the UK
ii. Fulfil a DBS clearance
iii. Provide a consistent 5-year UK domicile
iv. Pass Drugs & Alcohol screening at the start of their Mettis employment
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Carry out ultrasonic inspection of forged components to identify internal defects in line with customer and internal specifications
- Work to daily production targets and schedules, ensuring timely completion of inspection activities
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and inspection criteria to ensure compliance
- Maintain accurate records and ensure inspection documentation is completed, filed, and updated correctly
- Prepare for and complete internal and external audits, interacting confidently with auditors
- Support Nadcap accreditation requirements and customer approvals
- Undertake required training, examinations, and annual re-certification activities
Safety Responsibilities
- Comply with EHS and legislative standards
- Adhere to all PPE and safety policy requirements
- Always Promote safe working practices
- Participate in risk assessments and near-miss reporting activities
Quality Responsibilities
- Ensure the quality of components through accurate inspection and defect detection
- Demonstrate understanding of quality drivers and aerospace standards
- Support adherence to Company Quality Policy and customer requirements
- Contribute to maintaining Nadcap NDT special process accreditation
Delivery Responsibilities
- Complete inspection tasks within required timeframes and production schedules
- Support operational delivery through consistent performance against OPE and OTIF metrics
- Monitor and contribute to performance measures such as clocked vs booked hours
Cost Responsibilities
- Operate in line with departmental budgets and efficiency targets
- Identify and support cost-saving and process improvement initiatives
- Reduce rework and waste through attention to detail and compliance
People Responsibilities
- Maintain professional communication with internal and external stakeholders
- Work collaboratively within the team to achieve business objectives

Qualifications
- Experience within a similar manufacturing or aerospace environment
- Documented evidence of NDT examination, approvals, and relevant work experience
- Willingness and ability to complete Mettis-specific training and certification processes
- Must pass and maintain annual eyesight testing requirements
Desirable:
- BINDT Accredited Agency Certificate: EN 4179/NAS 410 Ultrasonic NDT Level I
- Experience working to aerospace prime specifications

Hours (option of): Monday – 06:00 – 18:00 Monday - Thursday

Thursday: 06:00 – 16:00 & 06:00 – 12:00 Friday
Hourly rate: £16.00 p/h
