Job Summary
The Boyce Group is seeking a qualified Heat Engineer or time-served Plumber — ideally someone confident across both plumbing and heating — to join our team on a self-employed basis for a prestigious project at a Historic Country Estate based in Bromham, near Melksham, Wiltshire (approximately 6 miles from Chippenham). This is a unique opportunity to work on a Grade II* listed property, which will be transformed into a Luxury Hotel and Spa. We are a small, friendly team with lots of opportunity for progression for the right candidate.
The Role
You will be responsible for specifying equipment, working out pipe routes, and carrying out installation, commissioning, testing, and fault finding across a varied programme of works. Our projects span listed buildings, new builds, and barn conversions, so we are looking for someone confident with the complexities of heritage properties as well as modern construction.
The work covers both plumbing and heating: first and second fix plumbing across bathrooms, DDA facilities, domestic and commercial kitchens, and customer toilets, alongside the installation and commissioning of heating systems — boilers, heat pumps, underfloor heating, unvented hot water cylinders, and associated pipework, controls, and system balancing.
This is a self-employed role, and we're happy to be flexible to allow time for your other work. We also have ongoing projects in Bristol and Newport should you wish to get involved, though this isn't obligatory.
Key Responsibilities
- Specify equipment and plan pipe routes tailored to the constraints of each project, including listed and heritage buildings.
- Install, commission, test, and fault find on heating systems and hot water, with strong problem-solving skills to diagnose issues efficiently.
- Deliver high-quality first and second fix plumbing across bathrooms, DDA facilities, domestic and commercial kitchens, and customer toilets.
- Read technical drawings, schematics, and pipework diagrams accurately.
- Work independently and manage your own project phases, while happily assisting the team with other tasks when your aspects aren't yet ready.
- Adhere strictly to all health & safety procedures, RAMS, and company policies, promoting a safe working culture on site.
About You
- Qualified Heat Engineer or time-served Plumber, ideally confident across both plumbing and heating.
- Proven experience working on listed or heritage buildings.
- A genuine "can-do" attitude — proactive, self-motivated, and able to identify tasks and support the team without direction.
- Reliable, punctual, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- You must have your own insurance and be able to provide certification on your completed work.
- A valid UK driving licence is desirable for roles requiring travel between sites.
Desirable Qualifications
- Gas Safe registration.
- G3 unvented hot water systems.
- F-Gas certification (for heat pump / refrigerant work).
What We Offer
- A self-employed role with the flexibility to allow time for your other work.
- The opportunity (but not obligation) to get involved in our other projects in Bristol and Newport.
- A supportive, team-based environment where hard work is recognised and progression is offered.
- Competitive day rate.
- Free on-site parking.
Pay: £180.00-£225.00 per day
Work Location: In person
