About Luma Education
Luma Education is a growing education centre in Uxbridge providing private tuition and tailored SEND support to primary and secondary-aged learners.
We are looking for an experienced, highly competent and child-centred Specialist SEND Teacher/Assessor to undertake educational assessments for children referred to us by their parents and to produce clear, practical Individual Learning and Support Plans.
This is an ad hoc role, with assessments offered according to parental referrals. A typical case is expected to involve approximately three to five paid hours, including preparation, direct assessment, report writing and parent feedback.
The role
You will assess a learner’s current educational profile, identify their strengths, attainment gaps and barriers to learning, and produce a personalised plan that our tutors and parents can follow.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing referral information, school reports, EHCPs and previous professional assessments.
- Conducting an initial consultation with the parent or carer.
- Carrying out appropriate educational assessments in areas such as reading, spelling, writing, comprehension, numeracy and general curriculum attainment.
- Using observation, pupil voice and age-appropriate assessment tools to explore learning behaviours, attention, communication, memory, processing and executive-function needs within your professional scope.
- Distinguishing between gaps in previous teaching and possible underlying learning needs.
- Identifying when further assessment by an educational psychologist, speech and language therapist, occupational therapist or other specialist may be appropriate.
- Producing a professional Individual Learning and Support Plan containing:
- The learner’s strengths and areas of need;
- Clear starting points and baseline information;
- Measurable short-term learning targets;
- Recommended teaching strategies and interventions;
- Appropriate resources and reasonable adjustments;
- Guidance for tutors and parents;
- Methods for measuring progress; and
- A recommended review date.
- Explaining findings sensitively and clearly to parents.
- Briefing tutors on how the plan should be implemented.
- Reviewing progress and updating plans where commissioned.
- Maintaining accurate, confidential and GDPR-compliant records.
- Following Luma Education’s safeguarding and child-protection procedures.
This is primarily an educational assessment and planning role. It does not involve diagnosing autism, ADHD or medical conditions. Formal diagnostic SpLD assessments may only be undertaken where the successful candidate holds the appropriate specialist qualification and current practising certificate.
Essential requirements
Applicants must have:
- Qualified Teacher Status or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
- Significant teaching experience with children and young people with SEND.
- At least three years’ recent experience as a SENDCo, Deputy SENDCo, specialist SEND teacher, learning-support teacher or educational assessor.
- Demonstrable experience conducting educational assessments and writing individual support or learning plans.
- Strong knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and the assess–plan–do–review process.
- Experience supporting needs such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism, ADHD, speech and language needs, working-memory difficulties and SEMH.
- The ability to select, administer and interpret assessment tools within their qualifications and the publisher’s requirements.
- Excellent analytical and professional report-writing skills.
- The confidence to provide clear, sensitive feedback to parents and practical guidance to teaching staff.
- A current enhanced DBS certificate registered with the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
- The right to work in the United Kingdom.
Desirable qualifications and experience
We would particularly welcome applicants who hold one or more of the following:
- NPQ for SENCO or the previous NASENCO qualification.
- Level 7 qualification in SpLD assessment or specialist teaching.
- Current Assessment Practising Certificate, AMBDA or equivalent recognised professional accreditation.
- Experience as an exam access-arrangements assessor.
- Experience working within private education, alternative provision or a specialist SEND setting.
- Experience contributing to EHCP assessments, annual reviews or multi-agency planning.
- Training in trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming practice.
Person specification
The successful candidate will be confident, analytical and exceptionally thorough. They must be able to build rapport with children, listen carefully to parents and translate assessment findings into a realistic plan that tutors can implement.
We are looking for someone who combines professional authority with warmth, sound judgement and clear communication.
Hours
There are no guaranteed weekly hours. Work will be offered according to referrals and arranged by mutual agreement. Some evening or Saturday availability would be advantageous.
All authorised preparation, assessment, report-writing and feedback time will be paid.
Pay: £30–£40 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
Working arrangement: Primarily on-site, with report writing and some parent consultations completed remotely where appropriate
