Full job description

Waking Night Support Worker

We are looking for a Waking Night Support Worker to join our team at The Sanctuary Project, providing high-quality, person-centred support to young people aged 16–25 within our supported accommodation services.

Our young people have a range of experiences, including care experience, trauma, and additional support needs. As a Waking Night Support Worker, you will play an important role in ensuring they feel safe, supported, and able to continue developing their independence.

This is not a sleeping night role. You will be expected to remain awake, alert, and available throughout your shift. Nights can vary significantly — some nights may be calm and focused on routine support, while others may involve responding to incidents, managing challenging situations, supporting young people emotionally, or liaising with external professionals. We are looking for someone who can adapt to both.

You will be a key point of support for young people overnight, helping to maintain a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

Building positive, professional relationships with young people
Providing emotional and practical support when needed
Supporting young people with evening and morning routines
Encouraging independence and positive choices
Maintaining professional boundaries while offering a caring approach
Responding confidently to challenging behaviour and difficult situations
Completing welfare checks and ensuring young people are safe
Monitoring the safety and security of the building, including CCTV
Responding to missing episodes and following individual procedures
Contacting and working alongside external professionals where required, including Police, Emergency Duty Teams, Social Workers, families, CAMHS and crisis services
Completing accurate records including daily logs, incident reports, risk assessments and safeguarding documentation
Completing reasonable household and administrative tasks during quieter periods

Although you will work as part of a wider team, there may be times overnight where you need to use your own initiative and make decisions confidently. Senior staff and an on-call manager will always be available for support.

We are looking for someone who:

Can remain calm under pressure
Is confident having difficult conversations and challenging behaviour appropriately
Understands the importance of professional boundaries
Has excellent communication skills
Is organised and able to complete detailed paperwork
Can work independently and use their initiative
Has a flexible approach and understands the needs of the service can change

Experience working with young people, vulnerable adults, mental health, care, support work, or similar settings is beneficial, however we are also interested in applicants with transferable skills and the right values.

A Level 3 qualification in a relevant area is desirable, but not essential, as training and development opportunities will be provided.

Working pattern

This role requires flexibility. Shift patterns are currently being reviewed, however waking night shifts are expected to fall between the hours of 8:00pm and 8:00am. Applicants must be willing and able to work flexibly across a rota pattern, including weekdays, weekends and bank holidays.
