We are the Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government's STEP Fusion programme, under a £70 million contract running to 2029, working with UK Fusion Energy to deliver HTS magnet systems for the STEP prototype power plant, while also contributing to tokamak systems and plasma integration.

We operate through three divisions:
Fusion - Fusion energy technologies, expertise and testbeds for government and private fusion programmes, including ST40, the world’s highest field spherical tokamak.
TE Magnetics - HTS systems for commercial applications including fusion energy, power distribution, life
sciences, and propulsion.
Ridgway Machines - Manufacturing equipment for the superconducting, electrical and wider energy sectors, enabling the rapid industrialisation of HTS products.
The role
We are now looking for a Mechanical Technician to join our Technical Engineering team, supporting a wide range of cutting-edge projects across our fusion and magnet programmes. We’re interested in well-rounded, hands-on technicians who enjoy variety and problem-solving — not individuals who have only worked on repetitive production tasks.
This is a hands-on, varied position where no two days are the same. You’ll work across multiple systems and projects, supporting engineers and scientists with build, installation, maintenance and upgrades.
You’ll be part of a highly collaborative team working on complex experimental equipment and systems, including our flagship ST40 tokamak.
Key responsibilities:-
Mechanical assembly, installation and integration of engineering systems

Supporting maintenance, upgrades and fault-finding across a variety of equipment

Working from engineering drawings and schematics

Providing general engineering support across projects and programmes

Collaborating with engineers, scientists and other technicians

Maintaining a safe working environment and adhering to H&S standards

Taking ownership of work areas, tools, and equipment quality
Requirements
Essential:
-
Apprenticeship-trained
- Experience in mechanical fitting, repair, servicing or maintenance

Ability to read and work from engineering drawings
-
Flexible, proactive and able to adapt to changing priorities

Strong problem-solving mindset and attention to detail

Good understanding of health & safety practices
Desirable
-
Maintenance or multi-skilled engineering background

Experience in R&D, scientific, or highly regulated environments

Exposure to vacuum systems, cryogenics or precision engineering
