Role Overview
The Architectural Steelwork Project Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of architectural steelwork projects from contract award through to completion. The role involves managing multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring they are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards while maintaining excellent client relationships.
The successful candidate will coordinate design, procurement, fabrication, logistics, and site installation, acting as the primary point of contact for clients, consultants, subcontractors, and internal departments throughout the project lifecycle.
Key ResponsibilitiesProject Management
- Manage architectural steelwork projects from inception to handover.
- Develop and maintain detailed project programmes.
- Monitor project progress, identifying risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
- Ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
- Coordinate internal teams including design, estimating, fabrication, procurement, and site operations.
- Chair project meetings and provide regular progress reports.
Client Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, architects, engineers, and main contractors.
- Act as the principal client contact throughout each project.
- Attend design, progress, and coordination meetings.
- Resolve technical and commercial issues promptly and professionally.
Commercial Management
- Monitor project costs against budgets.
- Manage project variations and change control.
- Support the commercial team with valuations, applications, and final accounts.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability while maintaining quality and programme.
Design Coordination
- Coordinate the production and approval of fabrication drawings and BIM models where applicable.
- Ensure design information is issued in line with project programmes.
- Liaise with structural engineers and architects to resolve technical queries.
Procurement & Fabrication
- Coordinate procurement of materials and specialist subcontractors.
- Monitor fabrication progress against programme.
- Ensure materials and fabricated components meet specification and quality requirements.
Site & Installation Management
- Coordinate site installation activities.
- Ensure installation programmes are achieved.
- Monitor subcontractor performance.
- Resolve on-site technical issues.
- Conduct regular site visits and inspections.
Health, Safety & Quality
- Promote a strong health and safety culture.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and company procedures.
- Review and approve RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements).
- Ensure quality management procedures are followed throughout the project.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate project documentation.
- Produce weekly and monthly project reports.
- Track programme, costs, risks, and contractual issues.
- Maintain project records and handover documentation.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience managing architectural or structural steelwork projects.
- Strong understanding of steel fabrication and installation processes.
- Ability to interpret architectural and structural drawings.
- Excellent project planning and organisational skills.
- Strong commercial awareness.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Experience managing multiple concurrent projects.
- Good knowledge of construction contracts.
- Competent in Microsoft Office and project management software.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Qualifications
- HNC/HND or Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
- SMSTS certification.
- CSCS Manager Card.
- First Aid at Work.
- Experience working to CE Marking / UKCA requirements and Execution Class standards.

Working Conditions
- Office based with regular travel to fabrication facilities, suppliers, and construction sites.
