Full job description

This is fixed term post for 36 months from start date to cover service needs.

We are delighted to advertise a band 6 Pre-Registration Genetic Counsellor post to join our friendly team in the All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) in Cardiff.

Starting salary will be on the first point of Band 6 on 36 months fixed term contract.

The Clinical and Laboratory services merged to form the AWMGS in April 2019, together they provide the medical genomics service to the population of Wales. The AWMGS has hubs across Wales with Specialist Medical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors providing genetic services in all the main hospitals throughout Wales. Together with Cardiff University, Wales Gene Park and the Welsh Government, the AWMGS are working to deliver the Welsh Government Genomics for Precision Medicine Strategy for patients within Wales. This is a highly exciting and innovative strategy with opportunities for staff, healthcare professionals, patients and the public across Wales.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

To provide a high-quality genetic counselling service at regional specialist level for the population in the South Wales area, within the All Wales Medical Genetic Service. To help individuals and families deal with a genetic disorder. This is to be achieved by helping the clients and their families to:

Comprehend the medical facts, including the diagnosis, probable course of the disorder, and the available management.
Appreciate the way in which heredity contributes to the disorder, and the risk of recurrence in specified relatives.
Understand the alternatives for dealing with the risk of recurrence.
Help the clients choose the course of action which seems to them most appropriate.
Make the best possible adjustment to the disorder in an affected family member and/or the risk of recurrence of that disorder.
