£28,000 - £36,000

Full Time or Part Time, Hybrid (Office in Corsham)

Consultant Band I - Consultant Band II

Luscinia Ecology is seeking a full-time or part-time Ornithologist to join our team.

Established in April 2022, we've had strong performance and growth over the last four survey seasons. We're a CIEEM Registered Practice and our strength is in the delivery of high-quality services, which ultimately leads to client retention and consistent client referral.

Our team mean the world to us. We're a friendly, welcoming and inclusive bunch and we give our Ecologists autonomy in a nurturing environment to deliver projects from quoting to invoicing.

As we're a new and developing company, we're looking for individuals to take ownership, apply new ideas, and improve overall delivery. We view this as a genuine opportunity to shape outputs.

We work across the South of England with our project portfolio located within the Home Counties, the Southwest, and the South Midlands.

The project-based nature of our work means you'll need to be willing to undertake travel with some overnight stays. However, we ensure our team maintains good work-life balance.

Our team culture is important to us and we aim to spend time together in the office twice a week (or around 50% of contracted hours).

We trust that you know best how to balance your work and other commitments in the most effective and productive way. For that reason, our default approach is flexibility - enabling you to work where, when and how works best for you, wherever possible.

We are also actively working towards a four-day working week by 2027.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The emphasis on the role will be to further develop skills and experience in ecological consultancy, and we'll support this aim from the outset of employment.

The role will routinely include:

Leading breeding bird surveys
Conducting wintering bird surveys
Analysing survey data and preparing technical reports
Supporting Ecological Impact Assessments and planning applications
Advising clients on ornithological constraints, opportunities, and mitigation measures
Contributing to Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and habitat-based ecological projects

REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrable enthusiasm for ornithology, ecology, and the natural environment
Degree (or equivalent) in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline
Experience undertaking breeding bird surveys and applying relevant survey methodologies
Strong bird identification skills by sight and sound
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience writing technical reports
Ability to work independently, flexibly, and outdoors, including early morning survey work
Experience of UK Habitat Classification and ecological survey methods
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
Member of CIEEM (or eligible)

DESIRABLES

Associate membership or higher with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) or other relevant professional bodies
Experience preparing ornithological chapters for Ecological Impact Assessments
Experience developing mitigation and enhancement strategies for birds
Protected species survey licences
Comfortable maintaining a professional online presence (LinkedIn)
