DESCRIPTION:
As a Manufacturing, Research & Development (M&D) Organic Chemist with Thermo Fisher Scientific, your role involves hands-on involvement in synthetic chemistry activities in the M&D labs, carrying out organic synthesis processes across various scales. This position necessitates a strong grasp of chemical compounds and the capability to securely carry out production procedures within specified time and quality benchmarks for our clients and partners. You will be involved in laboratory environments, working closely with diverse operational teams to reach project objectives and guarantee the secure and effective implementation of chemical procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Departmental matrix

Support the M&D value stream leader in delivering departmental critical metrics: safety, quality, delivery, cost, and process improvements.

Support the team leader in maintaining departmental SOPs/WIs/SWS/SPL and the training matrix. When required participate in internal and external audits.
Safety and Compliance:

Follow Protocols: Make sure all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.

Ensure the team conducts EHS GEMBAs and adopt tour safety culture find it, fix it and report it in our EHS reporting system Interlex in a timely manner.

Regulatory Alignment: Guarantee all processes align with pertinent regulatory demands, encompassing environmental and health and safety standards like ISO 14001 & 9001.

Perform risk assessments for chemical operations and implement measures to mitigate risks.

Complete or attend all the required safety and quality training.
Research and Development:

Conduct Experiments: Plan, design and complete experiments to synthesise and analyze organic compounds.

Develop Processes: Develop and optimize chemical processes for the production of new compounds or modify current process es to make it safe or efficient

Literature Review: Stay updated with the latest advancements in organic chemistry through literature review and apply this knowledge to ongoing projects.
Synthesis and Analysis:

Synthesize Compounds: Perform organic synthesis at various scales, from gram to kilogram, ensuring high-quality outputs.

Characterization: Use analytical techniques such as NMR, IR, MS, HPLC, and GC to characterize synthesized compounds and confirm their structure and purity.

Troubleshooting: Identify and solve problems in chemical procedures and tests.
Documentation and Reporting:

Maintain Records: Keep detailed records of experimental procedures, results, and observations in laboratory bench-books, amend or modify standard process work sheet if needed or follow clear instructions in the BMIR process.

Report Writing: Prepare technical reports, research papers, and presentations to communicate findings to collaborators and team members.

Data Analysis: Analyze experimental data and present findings in a clear and concise manner.
Collaboration and Communication:

Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including product development, quality control, and manufacturing.

Customer Interaction: Liaise with customers to understand their requirements and provide technical support.

Training: Train and mentor junior chemists and technicians.

Consistently explore methods to optimize chemical procedures for heightened efficiency and cost-efficiency.

REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Bachelor's degree (BSc or MChem) in Chemistry, or an NVQ Level 5 qualification, with a minimum of 5 years' experience in synthetic organic chemistry.

Preferred Fields of Study: Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related scientific field

Experience: Prior involvement in a chemical manufacturing setting, familiarity with large-scale (20L) synthesis of organic compounds and reaction approaches.

Technical Skills: Proficiency in laboratory techniques and analytical instruments used in organic synthesis and characterization.

Software Proficiency: Familiarity with JD Edwards or any ERP system and other laboratory management software.

Proficiency in Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact effectively with a small manufacturing team and cross-functional operations teams.

Skill in resolving problems: Ability to address and overcome challenges within chemical processes and experiments.

Documentation: Experience in scientific writing and maintaining accurate laboratory records.
PREFERRED SKILLS
