Job Description
The Clinical Services Manager (CSM) is responsible for the day-to-day operational leadership of all clinical services within Hale Private Clinic.
Acting as the operational link between the Director of Clinical Services (DCS) and the frontline clinical teams, the CSM ensures that every patient receives safe, effective, responsive and high-quality care whilst maintaining efficient patient flow, staffing, theatre utilisation and departmental performance.
Unlike the Director of Clinical Services, whose focus is strategic leadership, governance and organisational performance, the Clinical Services Manager is a highly visible operational leader who remains clinically competent and actively involved in patient care for a minimum of three clinical days each week.
The role exists to ensure the hospital operates safely, efficiently and consistently every day. The focus on the role will also be on utilising the management day to complete essential audits, maintenance scheduling, staff rota completion and helping to assist the admin team in safe handling of patient data between departments. This role will have a teaching responsibility to all clinicians, leading by example in order to build a safe and committed culture within the Hospital and all its clinical departments.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead the daily operational delivery of all clinical services.
- Ensure the smooth running of Theatres, Ward, Recovery and Outpatients.
- Maintain effective patient flow throughout the hospital.
- Chair the daily clinical operational huddle.
- Manage daily capacity and escalation planning.
- Ensure efficient utilisation of theatres, treatment rooms and clinical resources.
- Coordinate cross-department working to optimise patient experience and productivity.
- Escalate any Procurement concerns immediately to the Procurement team.
- Escalate operational risks to the Director of Clinical Services where appropriate.
Clinical Leadership
- Remain clinically competent and work a minimum of three clinical shifts per week.
- Lead by example through visible and accountable clinical leadership.
- Support frontline teams during periods of increased activity.
- Promote evidence-based practice throughout clinical services.
- Ensure safe staffing levels are maintained.
- Support consultants and multidisciplinary teams in delivering high-quality care.
People Management
- Line manage Department Leads.
- Coach and develop future clinical leaders.
- Conduct appraisals and performance reviews.
- Support recruitment and onboarding.
- Manage sickness, absence and performance concerns.
- Promote staff wellbeing and engagement.
- Foster a positive, professional and accountable culture.
Quality & Governance
- Support implementation of the Clinical Governance Framework and work closely with the DCS and Hospital Director for Quality Assurance completion.
- Ensure compliance with all CQC Fundamental Standards – aiming to achieve ‘Outstanding’ by identifying key changes needed to meet this target.
- Leading and delivering the process of becoming AfPP Gold Standard Accredited.
- Monitor departmental audit completion, keeping a close eye on departmental participation.
- Ensure incidents are reported promptly and investigated appropriately.
- Support Root Cause Analysis investigations when required.
- Ensure actions arising from audits, incidents and complaints are embedded into practice.
- Promote continuous quality improvement.
Operational Performance

- Coordinate daily staffing deployment.
- Reallocate staff according to operational demand.

Financial Responsibility
- Support achievement of departmental budgets.
- Monitor agency expenditure.
- Reduce unnecessary operational costs.
- Ensure effective utilisation of hospital resources.
- Identify opportunities for efficiency savings.
Communication
- Act as the operational point of contact for clinical departments.
- Liaise with consultants, managers and corporate departments.
- Maintain effective communication during operational pressures.
- Provide regular operational updates to the Director of Clinical Services.
Authority
The Clinical Services Manager is authorised to:
- Deploy staff across clinical departments.
- Amend staffing rotas to meet operational need.
- Authorise bank and agency staff within delegated authority.
- Escalate operational risks.
- Investigate operational incidents.
- Recommend suspension of staff pending review.
- Pause admissions or theatre activity where immediate patient safety concerns exist, escalating immediately to the Director of Clinical Services.
- Make operational decisions necessary to ensure the safe delivery of services.

Professional Requirements
Essential:
- Registered Healthcare Professional (NMC or HCPC).
- Significant experience within an independent healthcare or NHS surgical environment.
- Previous operational or departmental management experience.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
- Strong understanding of CQC regulations and clinical governance.
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
- High level of organisational and problem-solving ability.
Desirable:
- Leadership qualification.
- Degree or postgraduate qualification.
- Project management experience.
- Quality Improvement experience.
- ALS provider status or agreeing to work towards this
Working Pattern
- Full-time 40 hours a week.
- Initial minimum of three clinical role shifts per week - set to reduce to two clinical role shifts per week according to operational demand.
- One developmental management day per week, adjusted to two management days per week according to operational demand.
- Participation in the Theatre on-call rota where required.
