Full job description

About the Role

Good health and safety work is practical. It means identifying risks before they become incidents, making sure procedures reflect what actually happens on site, and giving teams clear guidance they can apply during everyday operations.

As a Health and Safety Advisor, you will support workplace safety across operational activities, helping managers and employees understand their responsibilities and maintain safe working practices. You will carry out inspections, review risk assessments, investigate incidents, monitor compliance, and recommend improvements where controls need strengthening.

The role combines site-based observation with reporting and advisory work. You may begin the day completing a workplace inspection, then review a risk assessment, investigate a near miss, prepare an action plan, or deliver a short safety briefing to employees or contractors.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out workplace health and safety inspections and compliance checks.
Identify hazards and recommend practical measures to reduce workplace risk.
Review and update risk assessments and safe systems of work.
Support managers in preparing suitable method statements and safety procedures.
Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses.
Prepare investigation reports and identify appropriate corrective actions.
Monitor completion of actions arising from inspections, audits, and investigations.
Maintain accurate health and safety records, registers, and supporting documentation.
Assist with internal health, safety, environmental, and quality audits.
Deliver toolbox talks, inductions, and routine safety briefings.
Provide practical advice to employees and managers regarding safe working practices.
Monitor contractor compliance with site safety requirements.
Support permit-to-work and site access procedures where applicable.
Review workplace equipment, activities, and working environments for potential hazards.
Assist with emergency preparedness and evacuation arrangements.
Monitor changes in relevant health and safety legislation and guidance.
Prepare routine safety reports covering incidents, inspections, trends, and outstanding actions.
Support occupational health and workplace wellbeing initiatives where required.
Liaise with external auditors, consultants, contractors, and regulatory representatives.
Contribute to continuous improvements in safety processes and operational controls.

What We Are Looking For

Previous experience in health and safety, SHEQ, workplace compliance, construction safety, facilities safety, or a related role.
NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, or equivalent recognised qualification is preferred.
Good understanding of UK health and safety legislation and workplace requirements.
Experience completing workplace inspections and risk assessments.
Ability to investigate incidents and prepare clear written reports.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Confidence communicating safety requirements to employees, contractors, and managers.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Experience with ISO 45001, ISO 14001, or ISO 9001 would be advantageous.
Strong attention to detail when maintaining compliance documentation.
Ability to prioritise safety concerns according to level of risk.
A valid UK driving licence may be required where travel between operational sites is necessary.
