Full job description

Job Purpose

The coach mentor provides individualised support and guidance to learners, helping them navigate their apprenticeship journey within Sports Turf, Golf Greenkeeping, and Horticulture industries.

Their focus on personal development planning, technical assessment, and sector-specific teaching ensures that learners achieve their goals and develop the skills required to excel in these industries. This role is key to fostering a supportive, motivating, and professional learning environment within the Pod. The Mentor works closely with Sector Specialists, Coordinators, and employers to ensure a holistic and industry-relevant approach to learner development.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Mentoring & Assessing

Conduct regular one-to-one sessions with learners to provide mentoring, and formative/summative assessment. Support learners in overcoming barriers and remaining motivated throughout their apprenticeship journey in sports turf, golf greenkeeping, or horticulture.

Individual Learner Support

Monitor learner progress, identify areas for improvement, and implement strategies to support development. Provide tailored advice that reflects both apprenticeship requirements and industry expectations.

Personal Development Planning

Assist learners in creating and following personal development plans aligned with their career pathways in sports turf, golf greenkeeping, or horticulture. Facilitate group workshops to enhance technical understanding and professional behaviours.

Collaboration with Sector Specialists

Work closely with industry specialists and employers to integrate technical expertise into mentoring sessions, ensuring learners are prepared for practical, real-world demands.

Administration & Compliance

Maintain accurate records of learner progress and assessment decisions in line with awarding body and DfE ESFA requirements. Support Coordinators with reporting, documentation, and quality assurance.

Person Specification

Essential

Strong understanding of mentoring, coaching, and assessing best practices.
Occupational competence in sports turf, golf greenkeeping, or horticulture.
Recognised assessor qualification (A1/TAQA/CAVA or equivalent).
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Experience teaching, training, or assessing in vocational or work-based learning.
Commitment to continuous professional development.
Experience working directly in the golf greenkeeping, turf management, or horticulture industries.

Desirable

Familiarity with learning management systems and digital assessment tools.
Ability to collaborate effectively with employers and industry bodies.

KPIs

Lead KPIs

Learner engagement recorded in LMS (95% recorded).
Attendance at scheduled workshops/group sessions (target 90%+).
Timeliness of learner records and assessment evidence (target 100%).
Tripartite reviews completed every 12 weeks (95% timely).

Lag KPIs

Learner progress meeting milestones (target 90%+).
Learner retention rate (target 85%+).
Learner satisfaction with mentoring/assessment support (4+ on 5-point scale).
Employer satisfaction scores (4+ on 5-point scale).
