Technical Consultant
Job title: Technical Consultant
Location: Exeter (office-based with hybrid working)
Salary: £27,000–£32,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Contract: Permanent, full-time
Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:00
About us
FIRST4TECH Ltd is an Exeter-based IT support and consultancy company. We look after a broad mix of small and medium businesses across the South West and beyond, providing everything from day-to-day user support to server and network projects, cloud migrations and security work.
Outline of the position
We are looking for a Technical Consultant to join our team at our Exeter office. You will resolve customer issues and take ownership of the technical work behind them, working across a varied client base rather than a single environment.
You will be someone our customers deal with directly, so clear communication, both written and verbal, matters as much as technical ability. The role suits someone who is comfortable moving between a busy ticket queue and planned project work.
We are most likely to appoint someone with two to four years of support experience. The level is not fixed. If you are earlier in your career, keen, and can show us you pick things up quickly, we would still like to hear from you. We will shape the role and the salary around the person we appoint. Training and support will be provided where required.
Key responsibilities
Reporting to the Managing Director and Service Desk Supervisor, you will handle incidents and service requests end to end, from first contact through to a documented resolution.
- Support and troubleshoot Microsoft 365, Windows client and server, macOS, Linux, printing, networking and common business applications.
- Support and troubleshoot mobile devices (Android and iOS) for business services.
- Monitor and action alerting for server health, backups, security alerts and device status, escalating where needed.
- Deliver small to medium projects: server builds and migrations, Microsoft 365 tenant work, network refreshes, hardware rollouts and office moves.
- Configure and maintain networking equipment including switches, firewalls, wireless, VLANs and VPNs.
- Apply and maintain secure configurations across customer estates: MFA, Conditional Access, device encryption, patching and endpoint protection.
- Support Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001-aligned work, including evidence gathering and remediation.
- Attend on-site customer visits for installations, deployments and troubleshooting, with mileage paid.
- Write and maintain clear documentation, runbooks and knowledge base articles.
- Identify recurring issues and recommend improvements to the systems we use and the way we support our customers.
Please note: while the regular hours and location for the position are Monday to Friday in Exeter, there will be occasions where this differs depending on the needs of the business, including occasional out-of-hours work for emergencies and planned changes. Time off in lieu or pay is provided where applicable.
Skills
Essential
- A working grasp of Microsoft 365 and Windows, and the confidence to troubleshoot both.
- Confident troubleshooting skills with a logical and methodical approach.
- Strong written and verbal communication, and confidence dealing with business users on the phone and in person.
- Able to work on multiple tasks and priorities at any one time.
- Able to work effectively on your own initiative and as part of a team.
- An avid interest in IT and technology, and a genuine willingness to learn.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites.
- Right to work in the UK.
Preferred
- Two to four years in an IT support or service desk environment, ideally at second line. MSP experience is a strong advantage.
- Working knowledge of Windows Server and core infrastructure concepts such as AD, DNS, DHCP and file services.
- Sound networking fundamentals: switching, wireless, firewalls, VLANs and VPNs.
Desirable
- Experience with Intune or another MDM, Microsoft Defender, RMM platforms, backup and DR tooling, or common ticketing systems.
- Hyper-V, VMware or Azure experience.
- Relevant certifications: Microsoft, CompTIA A+, Network+ or Security+, or vendor networking.
- Linux or macOS administration.
- Exposure to Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001 or similar frameworks.
- Scripting, particularly PowerShell.
- VoIP telephony.
Training and progression
We fund training and certifications and give you the time to use them. Certifications we typically fund include Microsoft, CompTIA and vendor networking. Where the role goes from there is largely down to you and what you are good at, whether that is larger projects and infrastructure design, client-facing consultancy, depth in a specialism such as networking, cloud, virtualisation or security, or progression to Senior Technical Consultant.
Progression is based on demonstrated capability and business need, and is discussed at regular reviews.
Working pattern
- First three months: office-based in Exeter for onboarding, shadowing and getting to know our clients.
- After three months: up to one day per week working from home.
- From six months: potential to increase to up to two days per week, subject to consistent performance, dependable ticket ownership and reliable communication.
- Some flexibility on working from home days may be needed for holiday cover, projects or incident response.
Benefits
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata).
- Workplace pension with employer contributions.
- Funded training and certifications, with an ongoing development budget.
- Mileage allowance for customer visits.
- Hybrid working after the initial office-based period.
- Company laptop and mobile.
- On-site parking.
