We are looking for an experienced Civil Liberties Lawyer to join our Liverpool team, handling a varied caseload of civil liberties and human rights matters while providing high-quality legal advice and support to clients. What do we need?

We are looking to recruit an experienced Civil Liberties Lawyer to join our Liverpool team, based at Walker House. This is a key role managing your own caseload of civil liberties and human rights matters, including inquests, actions against public authorities and related litigation, while delivering a first-rate legal service tailored to clients’ individual needs. You will provide clear, practical and sensitive advice, supporting vulnerable clients through often challenging circumstances while maintaining the highest standards of client care, advocacy and professional practice.

Key Accountabilities:

Managing an individual caseload proactively and in line with departmental standards
Liaising with clients to take instructions, provide case updates and give advice, including sensitively supporting vulnerable clients and those experiencing bereavement
Communicating clearly with clients, other lawyers and counsel to progress matters efficiently
Attending court hearings, including in-person, remote and telephone hearings
Reviewing disclosed case material thoroughly and identifying key issues
Meeting individual chargeable hours and billing targets
Preparing well-organised document bundles, including court bundles
Attending conferences with clients and counsel as required
Drafting detailed, case-specific documents, including letters of claim, instructions to counsel, court summaries and advice letters
Maintaining accurate email and file records, including document management, appropriate file notes and communication logs
Managing case funding appropriately, including monitoring funding limits and preparing applications where required
Preparing cases for billing and working with the billing team to conclude costs matters promptly
Working collaboratively with junior members of the team and delegating tasks appropriately

Key Experience & Skills:

2+ years’ PQE, or equivalent experience
Experience of inquests
Experience of civil actions against the police, state authorities or similar litigation
Experience of working with legal aid funding
Experience of working with alternative funding options
Excellent file management and administration abilities
Experience of building and maintaining relationships with existing clients and contacts to support ongoing work
Experience of meeting or exceeding KPIs, including chargeable hours and billing requirements
Experience of marketing and media communications relating to casework
Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude
Demonstrated passion for, and commitment to, human rights advocacy, access to justice and civil liberties work
