QinetiQ Training & Simulation specialises in the development of a wide variety of interesting, bespoke software solutions across a wide range of technology including Artificial Intelligence, AR and VR technologies and mathematical modelling, to support current MOD requirements as well as undertaking research for the next generation of simulation systems to support UK force development. Activities include software development, support to training, technology research and experimentation into how the Military can best use simulation/synthetic environments.
The Role:
The Simulation Systems Engineer role focuses on delivering and developing simulation-based training and synthetic environment solutions, primarily for defence land and maritime applications. The team provides technical expertise, research, innovation, and support for trials, experimentation, and training systems.
The successful candidate would work on designing, developing, integrating, testing, and evaluating simulation systems using both commercial technologies and bespoke software. Responsibilities include creating physics and visual models, integrating distributed simulation systems, developing innovative training solutions using technologies such as VR/AR, and producing technical documentation and presentations.
Tasks include:
- Applying engineering and systems engineering best practice
- Contributing to research-driven product development
- Providing high level technical input to work packages and supporting project delivery
- Engaging with customers and industry partners
- Supporting higher-level R&D and business strategy
- Assisting with technical bid activities
Experience and Skills:
- Simulation systems and tactical environment modelling
- Systems and software engineering; software languages such as C/C++, Python, or Java
- Distributed simulation standards (e.g., DIS, HLA, DDS)
- Game and simulation engines such as Unity, Unreal, VR Forces or VBS4
- Defence training systems and modelling & simulation concepts
- The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, experience working in multidisciplinary defence or aerospace environments, and the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly. Leadership capability, adaptability, innovation, and the ability to manage multiple projects are also important
- A degree in Science, Engineering, or Mathematics, or an equivalent, nationally recognised professional qualification
- 3+ years experience in defence, aerospace, or related technical environments.
Many roles in QinetiQ Training & Simulation are subject to national security vetting being completed, applicants who already hold the appropriate level of vetting may be able to transfer it upon appointment. Certain roles are also subject to additional restrictions, which mean factors such as nationality or previous nationalities may affect the roles that you can be employed in.
