About the Role
The Junior Developer plays a key role in the Group’s digital transformation, building and maintaining internal systems that support efficient operations and reflect both customer needs and operational realities. Working closely with the Group Head of Operations, the Junior Developer will translate business needs into concepts, designs and prototypes, and deliver these as practical, production-ready systems. The role will support the growth and maintenance of an expanding portfolio of internal systems, including CRMs, production trackers, supplier portals, automation tools and reporting platforms, while also contributing to the introduction of new Group-wide systems such as ERP. The Junior Developer will work directly with users across the Group, travelling regularly to sites to demonstrate new functionality, gather feedback and ensure systems continue to meet real operational needs.
The role offers the opportunity to contribute to system design and architecture decisions as well as implementation, with autonomy increasing as capability and performance are demonstrated. Delivery is expected at pace, with AI-assisted development tools forming the core workflow.
Success Measures
1. Internal systems across all Group companies maintain high availability during business hours, with Operations assigned tickets triaged and resolved within agreed service expectations.
2. New features and improvements are delivered at pace, in line with the fast delivery cadence as defined by the Group Head of Operations.
3. End users across all Group sites report measurable improvements in speed, accuracy and/or efficiency as a result of internal systems delivered or improved.
4. AI-assisted development practice within the Group continues to evolve, with new tools and techniques evaluated and adopted where they add value.
5. Security, data integrity and staging-first release discipline are maintained across all live systems.
6. Company values and behaviours are consistently demonstrated, with high levels of trust, collaboration and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Support
- Work with key stakeholders in each business to triage, prioritise and resolve tickets raised across the Group’s internal platforms, providing technical resolution and escalating to the Group Head of Operations where necessary.
- Maintain uptime and availability of all live internal systems during business hours, including server monitoring, security patching, SSL certificate renewal and database backup management.
- Maintain technical documentation across all systems, including AI assistant context files (we use CLAUDE.md per repo), technical reference documents, credential logs and standard operating procedures.
- Maintain the Group’s project and task tracker, keeping projects up to date, chasing outstanding actions and supporting delivery to agreed timelines.
- Support external security activities, including phishing simulation programmes, penetration testing engagements and ongoing Cyber Essentials compliance.
- Apply appropriate security hygiene to all systems work, including multi-factor authentication, access controls, input validation and secure handling of credentials.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant industry, legal and best practice standards, including General Data Protection Regulations.
Build
- Build, test and deploy new features and functionality across the Group’s internal systems, including CRMs, production trackers, supplier portals, automation tools and reporting dashboards.
- Work from design briefs and prototypes provided by the Group Head of Operations, taking work through staging environments to production release, with user testing and sign-off at each stage. Contribute to system design and architecture decisions where capability and context allow.
- Use modern AI coding tools (we currently use CLAUDE Code) as the default development workflow, continually evaluating new tools, techniques and emerging best practice.
- Follow staging-first release discipline across all live systems; no changes are deployed to production without staging validation.
- Translate user feedback and operational needs into areas of development, focusing on practical solutions and communicating progress in plain, non-technical language.
- Support the roll-out and ongoing configuration of Group-wide systems, including the Odoo ERP implementation, in partnership with the Financial Controller and wider Finance team.
Enable
- Travel regularly to all Group sites to meet end users, understand their needs, demonstrate new functionality and gather feedback on live systems.
- Deliver demonstrations and walkthroughs of new features to small groups of colleagues across Group companies, tailoring communication for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Write clear release notes, user guides and internal documentation to support end-user adoption of new systems and features.
- Collate materials and build presentation decks for stakeholder updates, demos and management meetings as required, including contributing to monthly and quarterly business updates.
- Act as an advocate for AI adoption across the Group, helping colleagues in other functions to use AI tools confidently and effectively in their own work.
- Undertake all appropriate training and skills development as necessary, including staying up to date with developments in AI tooling and techniques relevant to the role.
- Demonstrate high Health and Safety standards, wearing any PPE as required when visiting manufacturing sites.
- Work in line with Company policies and procedures.
- Remain flexible about responsibilities and tasks, carrying out any other tasks as reasonably required to meet business needs.
