We have an opportunity for a motivated person to join our exciting and friendly IT team. This job provides a chance for you to gain valuable work experience while pursuing a degree in Software Development through our successful Graduate Apprentice (GA) programme.
A Graduate Apprenticeship is a 4-year programme which helps you build skills and knowledge. You’ll work, get paid, and achieve a degree. You’ll spend most of your time learning on the job but will also be a student at a university. For more information you can check Youth Employment | Job Fife .
Our team manages the systems used for the Fife Council website, the system used by our Customer Service staff, and the system that our employees use to report IT issues or make requests to HR. We are continually involved in the introduction of new digital products for Fife Council.
You will work with lots of different people in the Council to help them in their jobs and will be working with systems that are used by members of the public.
You will study for your degree alongside your job, spending 80% of your time in work and 20% in university. This means practical skills and knowledge gained during the university days can be embedded in your work. Skills learned directly in the workplace are aligned with and can be applied to coursework and assessment. This allows you to attain an honours degree in 4 years, the same time as traditional full-time students.
You will study on a Graduate Apprenticeship degree programme towards a BSc (Hons) Software Development at Edinburgh Napier University. This Graduate Apprenticeship has a strong focus on the software development aspects of computing, combining theory and practice. You will learn about gathering, storage, retrieval and analysis of information. As you progress, you’ll gain a critical understanding of the analysis, design, development, testing, evaluation and modification of reliable, maintainable and high-quality software including real-time, mobile and large-scale enterprise systems.
As you progress through the course, more of your job role will be used to gain credit towards your final award. This is captured in the Professional Practice modules which allow us to personalise your learning to ensure it meets your needs, those of your employing organisation and the university.
Graduates of this GA will possess in-demand industry skills, with a solid understanding of software development alongside key communication, business and project management skills.
There is a lot to balance in taking on this role. We need enthusiasm from you in work, and commitment from you to complete the degree - which requires time and mental effort. We have experienced people in our team who will support and mentor you throughout the process. One of our recent graduate apprentices said: "it's hard work, but it's a great experience in a team who will really help you."
