Data Engineering Lead – Retail Data Platforms (Azure & Databricks)

Nottingham (Hybrid – 3 days onsite)
Start: July 2026
Employment Type: Permanent / Fixed Term

We are seeking a Data Engineering Lead with strong retail experience to drive the design, development, and evolution of enterprise-scale data platforms in a modern, cloud-first environment.

This is a hands-on leadership role focused on delivering scalable, high-performance data solutions. You will lead the data engineering capability, shaping technical direction, establishing best practices, and enabling business-critical insights through robust data platforms.

Working closely with stakeholders across business and technology, you will ensure data solutions are aligned with organisational priorities and support ongoing digital transformation.

What You’ll Be Doing

Lead the design and delivery of scalable data engineering solutions on Azure and Databricks
Build and optimise batch and real-time data pipelines using distributed technologies
Develop and enhance Lakehouse architectures, including Delta Lake frameworks
Deliver robust ETL/ELT pipelines, ingestion frameworks, and orchestration workflows at scale
Drive adoption of modern data engineering best practices, ensuring quality, performance, and reliability
Collaborate with stakeholders to translate retail business requirements into scalable data solutions
Provide technical leadership, mentoring engineers and ensuring strong engineering standards
Optimise data platforms for performance, cost, and scalability
Support implementation of CI/CD, DevOps, and Infrastructure as Code
Promote reusability, standardisation, and continuous improvement across the data platform

What You’ll Bring

Strong experience as a Data Engineering Lead / Senior Data Engineer within enterprise environments
Proven delivery experience in retail or consumer-focused domains
Hands-on expertise in:
Databricks, PySpark, Spark SQL
- Python and/or Scala
- Real-time data processing (Kafka / streaming technologies)
Deep experience across the Azure data ecosystem, including:
- Azure Data Factory (ADF), ADLS, Synapse Analytics
- Event Hub, Azure Functions
Strong understanding of:
- Data warehousing, Lakehouse architecture, Delta Lake
- Data modelling, governance, and quality frameworks
Experience implementing DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Azure DevOps, Terraform)
Ability to lead delivery, influence technical decisions, and engage effectively with stakeholders
Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with a track record of delivering data platform modernisation initiatives
